when do we find out his connection , i saw his reaction , but i don't recall when we are told in the film who he was in relation to "sam " and or his son , we figure it out by deductive reasoning but i just don't recall the scene , someone please help
shareI would say he is just a coincidental charterer that happen to see Sam play and gives Sam the ability to get past the unfortunate event with his son and at the same time he is thinking about his own needs probably because of his mother and the music and band is that escape

shareWhere did you pick up on the idea that Quintin knew either Sam's son or someone that was killed by his son? I thought it was odd that only Quintin was so upset when he found out the origin of the songs, plus some of the guitar shop owner's comments about "helping that boy" and stuff. But I don't think it was ever made clear exactly why it was affecting Quintin so much. Unless I missed something.

How could they make it playing those songs with the likely media interest that would surely follow.

I don't think he had anything to complain about and was basically being a whiner. Sam had no interest in doing this but Quintin dragooned him into it in increments. Wouldn't leave him alone, was totally up in his face all the time because he liked the music. After all that, where the hell does he get off acting all betrayed? It's a bunch of whiny immature *beep* is what it is. He thought Sam and his music was his golden ticket, but when the situation turned out to be more complex he threw a tantrum.
He could have easily said they weren't his songs and he didn't want to perform them with anybody else. Instead he led the band to believe they were his own songs and not that of a dead mass murderer. Even if they could deal with the moral aspect of it, there's still the media circus that would have hit them once word got out.
shareSam seemed to react to something when he listened to the recording of his son that was interrupted by someone opening the door and asking for a name, I think it was "Spire" or something like that? And we also saw this happen in the opening scenes, when the the recording was made. I wondered if that name connected to one of his new acquaintances, but I didn't see any connection. So what was Sam reacting to? Or am I just reading too much into this?
shareI'm with you. I think there must've been a connection and it was cut in the editing process. There was also the scene when they're rehearsing in the garage for the first time and Sam sees a poster on the wall that we're led to believe his son put there. Quentin gives very vague answers about how he knows of the space and who owns it. In the end, I think the filmmakers were worried that it was too convenient to have their lives that closely related and decided to cut stuff. But I never read the script, so who knows?

I agree that there was probably more of a connection between Quintin and Josh, but maybe it played out as too phony, so they cut it. Quintin did not live with parents, but he said "it's complicated" when asked for details about his life situation.
Didn't Q and the son have the same poster? The dorm room guy was not Q, if that was being implied, above. I didn't notice any connection between the two, other than being of similar age. I think the point was that Q had an unreliable mother, and needed a father figure, to finally grow up. And Sam connected with a pseudo-son.
shareI think it's as simple as that. Sam was the father figure he needed and he was hurt to find out he wasn't who he claimed to be.
shareAnd the poster was from a tour that Ween, Sonic Youth and the Flaming Lips did together. So, pretty well known bands. I think he was just struck by the fact that this kid Quentin was into the same stuff as his son.
