confused about this film, hated Marina and Fletcher

maybe Marina and Fletcher were meant to be hateable people. i wanted to slap them both.
they were totally narrowminded - only a baby is the right thing for a couple in their forties? of course the guitar session with the babies was boring. Marina was like a stepford mum. seems like she lost her brains together with the afterbirth. she behaved like a bitch when she wouldnt invite them to step into the appartement for the party.
why shouldnt Cornelia and Josh befriend two twentysomethings? you can have different friends. it is totally okay to be "an old man with a hat" as Fletcher accused. if Josh likes wearing the hat, why not?
to me, the solution from this film was to take the best out of different worlds. it was a good thing that they met Darby and Jamie. they could use some of their youthful spirit. they could also see that life is not perfect for twentysomethings when Darby and Jamie were about to split. Jamies egocentric dishonesty in Jamies work showed Josh his own integrity in Joshs work. Josh might never have a proper career or see his documentaries shown in Cannes but he could be proud of himself and self confident.

I wouldn't go so far as to hate them, but it was rotten of Marina to advise Cornelia that she needed to have children, knowing that Cornelia was unable to have any and had had several miscarriages in the past. If she had been the one to suggest adopting a child, as they eventually did, it might have been more helpful, but her remarks just came off as cruel otherwise. I think some of their obnoxiousness towards Cornelia and Josh was really more of a reaction to their feeling that they were being replaced as best friends.

Marina had no idea that Cornelia was unable to have children or that she had had any miscarriages. Cornelia and Josh didn't even tell Cornelia's father about their struggles with infertility, much less their distracted friends. It is still really rude to tell childless people that they "should" have children, even if you don't know that infertility is the reason for their childlessness, but Marina wasn't quite as terrible as you make her out to be.
