On a third viewing...

...this movie just keeps rising up the ladder of my favourite films of all-time. On each viewing you find something new, either in Phoenix's performance or background details which click into place and bring the entire plot together, that you didn't see before.

I've never really been a giant Joaquin Phoenix fan. I appreciate that he's a good actor but i've never been a "OH GAWD HE IS SO GREAT" fan of his, but with Doc Sportello he's created one of my favourite performances and characters of any film i've ever seen.

I'm with you, man. I really don't want to admit it but I honestly think this could possibly be Paul's best. I smite myself every time I think that and convince myself that Boogie Nights will remain untouched but every time I watch Inherent Vice.. I dunno. It just does something for me.

Plus, Joaquin as Doc is just hilarious

I've never had such a varied relationship with a movie as the one I've had with Inherent Vice. I've seen it 4 times over the past year, the last time being several months ago, but when I think about it I get a swirly, swoopy feeling inside and I know it's magic. There's really nothing else like it. It's not Altman, not the Coens, not Chandler. Don't know why people like grouping stuff together so easily. It truly is an original, unlike anything else that's come before it.
