Influences...

I know that before this came out and now after its release, people are looking for comparisons to other films. It's natural by now with PTA. We know he loves Kubrick, Altman, Huston and alot of other just RANDOM Cinema because of his upbringing.

Anyways, I think this film actually Stands Alone. It's influence is in OTHER PTA films. Sure, we see a little bit of Altman I guess, maybe The Coens but in all honesty, this is a PTA Film and nobody else. Who else would make a film like this? Same goes for 'The Master' and 'There Will Be Blood'... Yes, TWBB has some Vivid Kubrick-esque moments, especially with the use of Music but other than that, this guy has cranked out THREE Wonderful Films. Classic stuff. I don't like the term "Masterpiece" on recent Cinema. It's just not right to say but all 3 are on their way to being so and all are Wonderfully Original.

I think it's time to stop comparing and time to start appreciating arguably the Best Director and Autuer of this Generation. I know True Fans of his work are probably already at this point but I had to say it. After another viewing of IV I just can't get enough. The theories are coming and I love every bit of it!

Just saw Inherent vice for the second time...finally. Loved it so much more on the 2nd go around. And I can say that is pretty much true to all of his films. I'll probably give it another watch next week lol.

To me it almost felt like the "eyes wide shut" of PTA's catalog.

I know he has a dabbled a bit with conspiracies/occult related topics in the past but it almost felt like his balls grew a bit and he just let all kinds of stuff out of the bag in this film.

Of course,it didn't take itself too seriously like a Kubrick film. Like you said maybe some Coen influence with all of the humor.

It really reminds me of the two great little noir/horror flicks of the early 90s, "Cast A Deadly Spell" and "Witch Hunt", and it kind of captures the vibe of 1970 but needs Smell-O-Vision to really bring it home: stale pot smoke, combined with baked-on sweat, patchouli, and old sex.
