Any day now
Anyone get chills at the end of this film? I feel like I've been on a long weird journey (into the past) and there is sadness and nostalgia and I instantly want to go back.

Gelebt haben. Zu sterben, um wieder zu leben.
I get a really weird feeling. The ending is sad for sure, but it's handled so lightly that you're not how sad you should feel, yet at the same time, despite how light it is, it's pretty tragic. Very weird, but I love it
Howard Hughes was Italian?

I do... this is one of those rare movies that transmutes my physical being by watching it. After I first saw it, I had the image in my mind of being hit in the chest with a laser beam, telepathically communicating whole other dimensions of information far off the cusp of this reality... such a finely polished stone, such unbounded refraction of light.
Today is the day to say I love you to your best friend - chinese proverb
Some good mushies then?

Also needs to be said; one of the best soundtracks ever. I always watch until the end of the credits to dig the tunes.

And now it's on HBOgo so I'll be watching this once a week or so for a couple months. Absorbing the world, inhaling the smoke, enjoying the music and becoming one with a time that no longer exists. Not all that different from Doc himself. I remember reading all the Bad Reviews on here after people saw it for the first time... As if this film is even remotely a "One and Done" piece of Cinema. Somehow I knew I'd find my fellow Kubrick fans on here lol.
shareOh yeah. I was all set to hate this movie the first time around, but then watched it 4 times in the same weekend and can't stop thinking about it. You need to be in the right frame of mind and really pay attention and also have some frame of knowledge to like this movie. It's not for the casual viewer. Definitely some Kubrick magic (and reveal) going on and I wouldn't say that lightly. Finding a deeper appreciation for PTA than before where I just liked him and respected his work.
shareI've always loved PTA. From Hard Eight(Sydney) and Boogie Nights, to Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love... But as I've said on other posts, his latest trio of There Will Be Blood, The Master and now Inherent Vice, he's really reached a plateau not shared by many. His early films were appealing for their own reasons. I mean, he made Boogie Nights when he was like 26 years old, IMO that's impressive stuff considering the scope of the film. Now, he's reaching the point of mixing his old, stylish films with the intellect of knowing his artform. He understands stage direction. He knows exactly how a scene should be shot to get his desired effect. He's looking past the surface and really digging into the creation of a character(Doc being a great example but even the use of Sortilege)... His use of lighting, camera angles and one thing I really love, the PERCEPTION of the shot. That's something Kubrick was the King of and PTA has really gotten a firm grasp on it. So, you add in the themes and complex narrative and it all just flows together.
shareA little nostalgia from Thomas Pynchon

Exactly how I felt. I even watched the final credits entirely, is the only movie in which I've done this. It leaves you with a bittersweet mood at the end and I like it :)
