Isn't Doc too old to be a hippy in 1970?

Joaquin Phoenix was 40 when this film came out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't hippies overwhelmingly teenagers?

reply

There were hippies of all ages.

What the hell does age have to do with typically having long hair, funky fine clothes and related with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the taking of hallucinogenic drugs??...you Age-ist, bigoted, shppl!!!

People of all ages adopted the "counterculture" lifestyle at that time. To the point where in 1970 it wasn't really a counterculture anymore. I personally took Doc's backstory as perhaps being a Korean war vet (explaining his ability with a gun at the the end of the film) who became a beatnik in the 50's and eventually a hippie.

Doc is only 30.
He learned to shoot as a skip tracer.

Remember the "40 year old hippie" from the underground comix? Always shirtless, and barefoot.
