This movie looked good, but wasn't entertaining.

I liked watching this movie. I didn't like the plot. Yes, it was convoluted, but not in a way that was impenetrable. I got it all. It just wasn't interesting. I kept thinking, as much as was being piled on, eventually something would light a spark. It never happens.

That said, I liked watching it. It was visually stunning. I enjoyed it the way one would a painting.

However, since entertainment is still a big part of movie making, I can't give it a high score.

You can always count on PT Anderson movies to look beautiful. He really does have a knack for great looking cinema.

After this and Punch Drunk Love,I think that PTA, as talented as he is, just does not do feature length comedy very well.

PDL is a weird case. It's a rather awkward comedy that concerns itself with Barry's instability than it does conventional humor

Inherent Vice is also quirky in many ways, but delicately hangs in the middle of comedy and drama, never becoming a "full on" comedy.

I think PTA has the potential to pull off a feature length comedy, but in the case of PDL and IV, I feel as if the artistic merit dictated the comedy to go in a more meaningful direction, making it harder than usual to swallow

I like Punch Drunk Love and though this movie doesn't work out quite as well, considering its source material, it wasn't a bad effort. Its tough to fit all there was in the book in just two and a half hours.
