Question for those understand the film SPOILERS

So it was awesome, good film and I very much understood most of it.. In fact the only thing that's really throwing me off is all the confusion on these threads, so it makes me question the film as well too lol.. There are however a few little tid bits I didn't quite get..
1. Was shel(his wife) part of the cult the whole time? Knowing what was gonna happen? I only asked because she smiled at him after he stabbed their son and her, so it makes me wonder...
2.did the wife even die? The son was stabbed by jay but I'm not sure if the knife
got to the wife or not, which again makes me think she was part of it, kinda sacrificing their own son to make him king of the cult type deal?
3.was there a reason they chose jay as leader of the cult? If so I might have missed, kinda seemed like random selection to me...

This is how I read the movie.

1. No she wasn't a part of the cult. The reason she smiled was because of the *beep* up irony of the situation. She realized at that moment that she had fought her husband and that he was the one that had stabbed them to death.

2. Both the mother and son got stabbed and eventually died. The mother was bloody and seemed near death, while the kid was already gone.

3. The reason they chose Jay for this might be the often mentioned Kiev job, where he went insane. The cult seems to know about it. Maybe they needed someone that was temperamental/aggressive and lethal? Or maybe it was something more specific that he did on that trip?
That whole Kiev thing is kept vague and only hinted about throughout the movie, so I don't know..
