SPOILERS -- Obviously!
Well, here's what I think. I just saw the movie & haven't yet read through these threads. So it's just my immediate take on it.
1. Jay and Gal have done some evil *beep* whilst in the Army. Apparently Jay met Shel during some kind of Op, She said she volunteered for some stuff, and she can handle and trade in guns.
2. Some time during all their deeds, the three, but esp. Jay, must've lost their souls or had some traffic with demons or the devil.
3. Others, such as their victims, realize this and see the demonic influence esp. in Jay. I think that's why they all thank Jay before being killed. Note that Gal thanks him, too. I think they welcome death, maybe because they WANT to go to Hell. Note that the "bride" willingly jumps to be hanged and the one with the barbed wire blindfold is free to remove it but doesn't. Also, the Bridegroom (I guess) in white opens his arms to welcome being shot.
4. The List has been authorized by some demon with authority, the guy with the white hair. The list includes Jay, Gal, Shel and the boy.
5. Fiona is a sort of messenger from the demonic cult. She leaves the mark behind the mirror to sort of stake a claim to the family & ensure they are caught in this web of death. She also keeps an eye on them to ensure they don't catch on. Or, if they do, to report back to the Head Guy.
6. Jay and Gal strayed from the script. They were supposed to kill the MP. Instead they got emotional and started killing the participants in the ceremony. The participants didn't know they were "camping" until they were getting shot. I also don't think they knew where Jay's family was, as Fiona wasn't with them. Jay led the cult right to them.
This is one of many reasons he was a horrible Hit Man!
7. Since Jay and Gal and his family were on the list, they were killed, but before the planned time, due to Jay straying from the plan.
8. I'm not sure how they got Shel to participate at the end, unless she, too, became possessed. I don't think she was with the Cult. I took her laughter as ironic surrender. It's also why I think she'd done some bad things and would be paying for them this way.
I'm open to correction or enlightenment if I missed anything!

These are pretty good explanations/ interpretations. Good job, KutWrite! Also, if I may add some of my thoughts on the movie, I think that Fiona being with Gal enabled her to somehow influence him to convince Jay to accept the job. I'm a bit blurry on how but it seems like she did. Also by going through Gal first put Jay on the blind in being suspicious of a conspiracy. And another thing, it would seem that the whole thing is a sort of a tryout for Jay to be proclaimed at a position as he has been by the end of the movie. Whatever the objective of the cult is, it seems like, Jay, after the bloody finale, became the one that embodies what the cult believes hence the crown.
What do you all think?
Great movie, by the way. I think this one will still be an effective horror movie in the future as it is now mostly because of its subtlety and depth.

i don't think there were any demons in this movie. jay and gal probably had ptsd.
