Harmony Korine?

It would've been really intriguing seeing his take on the book. Just an idea that occurred to me while watching ;p

anybody agree?

LOL

I'm sure most people especially neophytes to the cinephilic community ares saying Harmony who? But he was the be the "next big thing" in the late 90's and sadly faded into obscurity. I was never really a big fan of his style and from the looks of how his career kinda fizzled out not too many people were either.

Not sure what "neophytes to the cinephilic community" would be doing on the John Dies at The End boards, but anyway.. Or if cinephiles of any variety would describe Harmony Korine's career so favourably (save Harmony Korine himself).

In retrospect it is easy to say this. But after the buzz of Kids and Gummo in the late 90's people actually thought he was going to make something of himself. I personally never saw what the whole hoopla was about. But it cannot be denied at one point he was thoroughly talked about.

Kids experienced quite a lot of attention, although I wouldn't say popularity, by addressing a pretty obvious gap in modern film: a completely unfiltered and honest look at urban youths. To a great extent is shattered adult's views on what their kids are up to (if not somewhat exaggerated to the average youth)

But its value was in how transgressive and realistic it was. A bit like The 400 Blows, only with a quarter of the artistic merit, which is why Korine got all the credit for it as 'The new voice of modern youth'.

And yeah Gummo was just a further foray into hyperrealism, which sort of revealed a director who had no idea what he was doing and was simply following a really simple artistic mode: ignore aesthetic and traditional narratives in an pretentious attempt at anti-art.

So I kind of thought Gummo destroyed his career as fast a Kids had made it. That is, until he managed to convince someone somewhere in Hollywood, that at the grand age of 40 he somehow still had a mainline into modern youth culture.

dear god no!!! spring breakers was the worst piece of trash I've ever had the displeasure of watching. This movie is actually good and has a complex story. If you've seen spring breakers you would know that that guy knows nothing about story or what makes a good movie. That guy shouldn't even direct music videos. So bad..

Spring Breakers is a bit of a mess, but I thought it was quite beautifully shot and it stayed with me afterward. Harmony Korine is too absorbed by his own meandering style to commit to something legible, however it's the vividness of his films that strike me, and his grasp of zeitgeist. John Dies at the End would have benefited greatly from that influence.

Plus, you can't just say 'this movie is good and this movie is bad', that's not making your point.
