Why change the dog's name?

Why did they do that? Molly is so much funnier since it's such a cute name...

Anyone who knows?

I just registered to come on here and ask the same! The movie certainly doesn't do the book any justice

Why would they change a name because of money?
They already had the rights to the book. It's not like they would have to pay extra cash to get to use the names.

Would be funny though if there was no one named John in "John dies at the end"

Dude -

I selected the best dog I could find for the film. He was a male and his name was Bark Lee. He responded to his name. Changing the name guaranteed us a better canine performance

Nice! Thanks for sharing.

My best guess was that the dog they fell for happened to be male, so they changed it because Molly would be a stupid name for a guy...
Couldn't stop thinking of Lassie though, all the Lassie dogs in the old days were male.

I also kind of wonder why they changed her from a female to a male.

That's one of the most retarded excuses I've ever heard.

Does a character ever even call to the dog in the movie? Even if the character had to call out "Molly", it's like this "director" isn't aware of editing.

reply

Don Coscarelli is well aware of his thing. It's not so the characters can call to the dog, it's so the animal trainer/director/whatever can call to/direct the dog.

I just saw the film and I thought that the reason was because the dog actually must've died during production and therefore the grave sequence at the end; but now that I think about it, it would have meant an enormous amount of plot changes just for the death of a canine! I remember looking at the gravestone and thinking the name was hilarious and appropriate, i.e. Bruce Lee and the karate/soy sauce analogy. Calling a dog Molly in the book probably is more striking to readers because . . . it's a human name. If you really are Coscarelli, I know that David Wong was very honoured to be contacted by you. When I read humbling dedications of thanks to each of the readers who helped him to let them know how grateful he was, I felt among friends. I just wrote a review for 'John Dies...'; it was a special experience and will help me better understand the book. Kind regards, Dr Zachar Laskewicz http://www.nachtschimmen.eu, [email protected].

I liked the name change, Bark Lee was cute.

On the other hand, I understand how pointless and irritating it can be for those who know the book better. And I also named a golden retriever "Banana Dog" so I am beginning to think I am just insane.

reply

I named a cat "Phils Cow" once. I don't think you're insane for naming a dog "Banana Dog" :)

reply

I like that, Phil's Cow. Thanks about the dog. :) I just like to be slightly unconventional with animals.
