Does anyone find this movie bad?

I find the first half of this movie is goodish, but the second half of the movie is pretty bad. I'm genuinely curious why people like this movie because I don't really see any good in it other than the first half.

I know someone who claims this movie is one of the best movies ever made and I don't understand why.

My thoughts: I recognize that it's a flawed and largely incoherent movie, but strangely I still consider it one of my favorite movies. I think it's the characters and the atmosphere...the movie has this oddly comforting feel to it. Also, I found it rather hilarious, so that's another big part of what I like it. As for the plot... Maybe I've just done too many drugs (allegedly), but a lot of the interdimensional babble and riddles kind of made some sense in a vague, hazy way.

Interesting.

I like the first half of the movie, but I hate the second half not because it is "random" but because the movie breaks its own rules. One concept is that the white mist is a bunch of aliens... yet they also come from the other dimension? Which is it? What the slugs? The other dimension says it has never crossed into our dimension yet the white mist is also theorized to be from their dimension. So which is it? have they crossed over or haven't they.

As far as directing goes, the second half is considerably worse than the first half for some strange reason. I found it weird that the girlfriend was literally a walking lock-pick. She had absolutely nothing to do with the plot other than open a door. Kind of odd.

Nope. Absolutely loved it. The books are great, too!

This is one of my favorite movies. It has bad parts but all to get I found it very fresh and original. I loved it.

I'm with you, I don't think it's very good, and that's saying something, because with me, it's usually the weirder the better.

There are a lot of jokes/one-liners that make me laugh, but I didn't find the overall story very entertaining.

I probably should watch it again, though. I was in a pissy mood when I watched it and I was expecting a comedy-horror movie to cheer me a bit, but this one just made me pissier.

I did like Bark Lee, though. And the tits.

I wouldn't quite say this film is bad, but it's certainly in mediocre territory in my opinion.

I also found the first half intriguing, but it was pretty clear in the second half that Don Coscarelli had run out of ideas on how to wrap this up. With a bit more of a comprehensible plot and a bit less of the meta humor, this could have worked. As it stands, it's near miss. 5/10 stars from me.

reply

That was my general feeling, but in my opinion the second half was littered with so many plot-holes and issues that it was hard to even bear the film.

Also, the timing on a lot of the jokes didn't really work. The timing throughout most of the film was off.

Interesting concept, bad execution.

This was so horrendously excruciating to watch I stopped it around 17 minutes or so into the film. I love the Phantasm series, and wanted to see this because of Coscarelli and Scrimm, but I couldn't even finish this piece of garbage. This is something I rarely do...stopping a movie and not finishing it.

Your opinion is not valid.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

Neither is yours, you troll.

reply

Sorry, but it is. I watched the whole thing. You're the troll, obviously.

I'm with you - I really was into it -

Then they opened the door in the mall and the whole thing went kablooey. I hated it from that point on.

The ending bit with the reporter was pretty darn good however. That was a nice touch.

It started out okay, had a great atmosphere. It was somewhat incoherent and disjointed but it was watchable. Somewhere in the middle it took a really bad turn and became even more incoherent and stupid.

That'll be 10 dollars...5 if ya got crack.

reply

This is not to my typical liking.

I strongly dislike the horror genre
Can't stand those vampire and werewolf movies

for some reason I really really liked this film

reply

This isn't a horror movie...

reply

right here on imdb it is *"Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi"*

reply

It says horror because it has horror elements, but that doesn't make it a horror.

For example, Jurassic World has some horror elements in it and uses jump scares, but it is not a "horror" movie.

John Dies at the End has some horror elements but it isn't a horror.

Also, IMDb isn't the most accurate in its genre listings. I would say John Dies at the End is mostly a Sci-fi comedy with a touch of unsettling imagery... but the emphasis of the film is the comedy and the sci-fi elements. The emphasis of the movie isn't to scare you.

I loved the concept and the first half was really good...However, it did fall apart a bit toward the end...Still, overall it was pretty good...

The feeling we have here — remember it, take it home and do some good with it. Please be kind

Whenever a movie has a 10-minute exposition scene to tell the viewer what is happening, that movie is probably bad...
