She had a shock seeing the younger lady of the house dressed in a fascist uniform. She goes up to her room & dies on the floor. 30 year old women rarely die of shock from seeing something upsetting. If it was the Victorian era, she might have fainted but smelling salts would have fixed her up right. Did she commit suicide? If so why didn't they indicate it was a suicide?

As I recall, it had been indicated earlier in the story that the German Jewish maid Rachel suffered from asthma. The upset brought on by seeing the chauffeur in a Fascist uniform caused her to have a severe asthma attack which killed her. Asthma attacks can be triggered by emotions of fear or anger. However triggered, such attacks could be deadly even in the young as they didn't have the puffer medications of today. It definitely wasn't suicide, she died of natural causes.

sharePrior to her collapse on the floor, she was coughing a lot in earlier scenes. That indicated to me that she had some kind of respiratory issue such as TB. Since she has a daughter to take care of, I don't think suicide would be the cause.

Come on guys! It was obvious she died of asthma after the shock of seeing LADY PERSIE in that shop wearing a black shirt British facist uniform. The shock caused the attack and she wasn't able to ward it off just by going to lie down or putting her head over a bowl of steaming hot water. Asthma could be deadly back then before inhalers were brought about.
