zombie movie w/ racist caricatures of SE Asian people instead of zombies

Gotta love that description of the movie, as quoted in a recent article titled "Does Hollywood hate Asia?" written by a local magazine's managing editor here in Chiang Mai where the film was shot. A good read =)

The article is one of the saddest race baiting attempts I have ever seen.

In what way? Almost everything it says is true. "No Escape" is a bizarre looking film, that seems to have no hold on reality, but a profound fear of non-western locations. I fully admit I'm saying this just based on the trailer, and perhaps the film is very different from the way they're selling it, but honestly it looks extremely xenophobic, and for some reason Hollywood in general has no problem with being racist against Asians.

"no hold on reality" - it's a MOVIE not a documentary. You don't hop on the Avengers board saying that do you.
Seriously, it's so funny now that no board is free of someone who has learnt the word xenophobia or is screaming racism. Such a shame, as the words start to lose any impact now

You're right, I don't go on the Avengers board saying there's no hold on reality in that film, but the Avengers isn't trying to make parallels to real world situations. There was a coup in Thailand last year, which though it was certainly politically troubling, was for the most part peacefully executed. Here we have a film, which like the Avengers is fantasy, but unlike the Avengers has enough of a hold on reality that it can influence people's ideas of world events. I do not throw around the word racism and xenophobia without any consideration, and who knows, maybe the trailer is false advertising, and the film itself is more nuanced, but the way that trailer is cut shows South East Asia is either the exotic land of mystery or a dangerous place where white people get killed by mask wearing militants, neither approach is accurate, and neither is fair to the people who actually live their day to day lives, often under very difficult circumstances in these areas.

Actually, I've seen plenty of discussion on the Avengers board about their lack of diversity. Can you name a single Asian or Hispanic in that entire universe? Because the typical moviegoer sure cant.

I guess you missed the Korean doctor from "The Age of Ultron".

That sounds like a really funny movie.

I just saw the movie and characterizing it as a racist zombie movie makes no *beep* sense. I'm still waiting for that hilarious movie to happen.

Written by someone who apparently didn't actually watch the movie.
