Weinsteins Sit Out Berlin Film Festival

The Weinstein Company surprised buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market with the cancellation of sales activities from its suite at the Grand Hyatt hotel.

On the eve of the festival, the company sent out emails to key distributors informing them that it would not be going ahead with previously scheduled meetings, a move that prompted chatter about the company’s state of health.

But in an interview with Variety, co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said that production delays were what caused him not to brave the Berlin winter.

“We are in the final stages of mixing ‘Hands of Stone,’ which everybody loves, but with Usher still working on the soundtrack, we just couldn’t make it in time,” Weinstein told Variety. “And with that the only movie we are selling, there was no reason for myself or David (Glasser, TWC’s COO) to be there.”

“We were also bidding on the George Clooney movie ‘Suburbicon,’ but with that going to Paramount there was no need for me to be there,” Weinstein said.

“Normally, I’d travel to Berlin from the BAFTAs. As it was, we had five production and acquisition executives in Berlin,” he added.

Weinstein said that the company has “a huge year coming up” and will be selling three films in May at Cannes. He was unclear whether the cost of the Hyatt suite in Berlin could be recovered.

Weinstein also declined to comment about the possibility of Stevie Wonder being lined up to provide a track for “Stone,” a Jonathan Jakubowicz-directed drama about the relationship between boxing great Roberto Duran and his legendary trainer Ray Arcel.

“Stone” stars Robert de Niro as Arcel and Edgar Ramirez as Duran. The film also stars Ellen Barkin, John Turturro and Ruben Blades.
