Does Roth even know what horror is? He is a mediocre filmmaker that's it. But to call him master of horror, he should have atleast one great movie, even if fluke.
Hostel, Hostel II, Cabin Fever. (Haven't seen The Green Inferno).
You have a very good and valid point. All his films are supposed to be really scary. So with each of his releases I expect to be scared and shocked. However with each of his releases I'm neither shocked nor scared, in fact I'm more and more disappointed. Don't get me wrong I did actually like this movie but it didn't scare me.
Now Tobe Hooper has made one great movie in his career. Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But I consider that the finest horror film ever made. Apart from that, jury is out on Poltergeist but that's a decent movie. Rest all has been pretty poor.
But I would consider Hooper a master before Roth.
This is my list of masters of horror divided in tiers:
The first tier would have Argento, Carpenter, Bava, Craven.
The 2nd tier would have Holland, Fulci, Romero and Gordon.
The 3rd tier would have Hooper.
Others like Kubrick, Raimi, Spielberg, Murnau made some great horror films but they also branched out in other genres. Hence, I am not including them here.
Mike Flanagan(Oculus) and James Wan are two really good filmmakers who could breach the first and second tier IMO.
Hacks like Mick Garris, and Eli Roth shouldn't be considered as maestros. It only brings the genre down.
The genius of this film is that it isn't scary, it's only mildly gory and no real jumpy scares yet it's an absolutely brilliant and effective horror with a great story.
