character development turned out to be a waste of time..

man im all for getting to know the characters in a film so you feel for them as they go through there trials and tribulations..
however
that was a lot of character development on the three buddies only to have them killed off midway through the film....
kind of a waste of time and considering the film wasnt bad once it got going..
this was time that was seriously misused..
way too long developing nothing...
i mean why not develop the characters of the fireman or the trolley operator ?? it would of been just of futile i suppose...
this film took too long to get to the point but once it got going it was ok..im sure the makers of this film are gonna look back and wish they could do a few things differently..
but then again i thought thats what private screenings and test audiences are supposed to do,,,
i think they missed the boat on what could of been a much better film...

I thought so too. Though near the end it did seemed to have worked in a way, for me at least. The first half, couldn't care less about the characters...they actually really annoyed me. Bunch of grown up men, acting all immature and apparently with only one goal in life. Reminds me of those type of teenagers who just HAD to lose their virginity before graduation! And a couple of stupid who...um...women. I'm usually "I hope he/she won't die" in these movies, but here I was like "whatever".
Then once the drama started you could actually see they aren't just that, they actually cared for others and tried to help...sometimes risking their own skin in the process. I still wasn't "all tears" cause of their death...but I respected them more than I did at first, I guess. :)

Agree, first 40 mins were a waste, thought I was watching the wrong movie.

well, i am not sure what exactly to make of this, but IMDB states eli roth as the writer and two other people as the script writers. taking this in consideration, that is not a flaw, it is one of the basic elements of every eli roth story. he uses half the film to introduce the characters, so that weither or not you like them, you somewhat care for their destiny.

Exactly.
What would be the point of killing just random characters you know nothing about?

The first part was longish, but I though it worked decently giving more meaning to the deaths. The characters weren't that memorable, but worked way better than in many other disaster movies.

I liked that the main characters weren't invincible or incredibly lucky and that worked for the film. It quite quickly became apparent though that everyone was going to die, which is kinda boring. They should've made the prisoner not a serial killer and leave the last three alive after hiding the tsunami in some rocky crevaces or something. Or just kill all three at the tsunami.

Eli Roths death was pretty gruesome. After he got stuck under the arc and things started to get even worse I remember thinking "maybe he'll get out somehow, he's kinda the good guy after all." So the character development worked for me, even if it wasn't spectacular.
It was interesting choice for one of the group being super rich and known. I think they could've emphasized even more his way of thinking with money and fame after the quake. Maybe even just before his death begging "do you know who I am" or "I have money".

thank you.

and about the character introduction being longish, roth does that every time and i actually like it. hostel, hostel 2, cabin fever, aftershock. first 45 minutes are always character introductions with him. i particularily liked that with hostel 1, because by the time the carnage begins is had already forgotten, that i was watching a horror film. by that time he had me thinking i was watching a romantic comedy with teenagers and then ..... BAM!

yeah, i liked that too, but i liked knowing that they would eventually all die. it made me suspicious as to what the end twist would be and i think they kinda delivered well on that.

also liked that at the end it was just the girl. they played the "the tough honest chick is the only one surviving" and then slammed it with a sledgehammer. also the fetus thing towards the end was brilliant. i had already forgotten about that when the callback came.

It's also worth adding that killing off main characters unexpectedly after giving them decent screen time is nothing new. Psycho did this very well and it payed off. I am not saying Aftershock handled it as well as Psycho but the concept is fine.
