Do you think Carrie and Fred get free Apple Products? Im sure they do, since its there where and its not covered like other shows. I think the apple charger skit was amazing !π

1) I suspect that the characters they portray with Apple products are mostly people who would/do likely use them in real life or could be expected to (so it's "realistic" for the characters/scripting) .
2) Apple pays for product placement. If they don't pay, the logos are hidden (you can still tell the characters are using Apple products, e.g. you'll see recognizable details of Mac OS X) but you don't see the Apple logo--it's masked out or somehow covered on the products. You'll notice that on "The Good Wife" (among others).
Generally if you see a logo for a real company and it's not just part of a big scene (e.g. a bank logo on a building in a skyline), it's product placement. It's possible (likely, even) that Apple "gives" products to pay for placement, but I suspect it's either a whole LOT of products (like a bunch of Mac Pros needed by the video production/editing team)... a few Macbooks and iPhones are probably not enough "payment".
hopefully some commodore 64 stuff is in the next season.
