Why Kristi and not Katie?

I guess there is no definitive answer, so we have to speculate on this; but why, when the sisters are little girls, does the demon attach itself to Kristi and not Katie?

The demon wants an infant boy. Katie is older and therefore will reach child-bearing age first.

And before you say that Kristi, being younger, was more susceptible to Toby's influence, let's keep in mind that Katie was once Kristi's age. Why not attach himself to Katie when she was 4 or 5 years old?

Maybe the deal wasn't made when Katie was that age. So this could be why he never attached himself to her. Then again, there could be something about Katie that stopped him from choosing her to begin with. Like Katie is someone special so he is unable to obtain her for the very thing he needs... a kid. Katie is the chosen one and as much as he'd like he cannot have the chosen one's soul or have her have a kid for his own gain. Sure he might be able to control her but not much else since it wasn't Katie that got chosen for whatever reasons it was.

Actually, from my memory of the movies it makes perfect sense. We all want to think that the demon haunted Katie first because she is the main target in the first movie. However remember that the chronology of the movies is backwards - 3 actually takes place first (while kristi and her husband are moving into their home or preparing for the birth of their son, I can't remember which) then 2, then the original (though the original overlaps with the end of the second movie). So the demon haunts kirsti as a child, returns to haunt her once she has a son but then moves on to haunting Katie after kristis husband makes that weird (and messed up) deal with the demon to get him to haunt a blood relative of the family.

So the demon really was after kristi first, it just seems like it would be Katie since we saw the first movie first.

If I misunderstood your question and you just want to know why Kristi not Katie at first, maybe kristi is just more susceptible to haunting than Katie is. Even in the first movie, Katie was not fascinated with the demon at all and just wanted him out of her home. Maybe some level of sick fascination makes it easier for the demon to gain control.

If you remember the first movie, Katie said she always saw a dark shadow standing at the foot of her bed and never Kristi's. I don't know if they forgot about that while they were writing the third one so it was just a plot hole or what but I did think it seemed weird that this movie contradicted the first one a bit. I liked it anyways, though. One tiny contradiction doesn't ruin the entire movie for me.

Well, my take on the whole "standing in front of my bed" memory is similar to how, even though the demon is attached to Kristie, the demon seems to like messing Katie. So, even if the demon is attached to Kristie, Katie could still notice the shadow since it was always attacking her to get to Kristie to agree to do things.

On the OP's question, I thought that the demon did haunt Katie, at first. At least, that's what I got out of the part when Julie and Dennis are talking about Kristie's irrational fear of the imaginary friend Toby. If you watch that part again, you'll see Julie talking about how Katie would wake up in the middle of the night and sleep in the bathroom.

I thought that was the director's way of hinting at how she was also "tempted" by the demon <shrug>.

Actually, Katie mentions in the first movie that the demon was always near her not Kristie. She mentions that they both saw it, but it only haunted (or whatever that was) her.

Also, why do they never mention that their mother and Dennis were killed by the demon?

"Also, why do they never mention that their mother and Dennis were killed by the demon?"

I wondered about that, too. Also, in the second film Katie says to Kristi that she should stop (investigating this whole demon stuff) unless she wants to end up like their mom. Is it me or does it make no sense (at that point)?

Because they do not remember it. Dennis & Randy find a passage in a book (in this film) that states that the coven often casts a spell that literally erases the memories of its victims.
This is why they only have select memory of their childhood and its events.

I thought that, but maybe that starts happening after what went on in the third film?

haven't seen the first one in a LONG time, but maybe Katie can't have children, maybe somehow the demon could tell that kristi would be the first to have a son.

My opinion was that maybe Kristi was chosen because she was the more *imaginative* or *accepting* of the two.
She seems very open to an imaginary friend, while Katie seems more no-nonsense.

The other theory could be that Grandma Lois didn't make the 'deal' with the demon until the kids were those ages.
