What do people think after episode 2?

I'd say the second episode was so much better than the first that it was like watching a different show; the grub has become a butterfly.

To a limited extent this has made me rethink my reaction to episode 1. Much of the absurd and anachronistic sexism dialogue ("women aren't allowed in there" etc) should maybe not be regarded as 2011 preaching, but just as setting the scene. The Kennedys had a similar problem for which it too was criticized, people given lines no real person would ever have said - but how do you give historical background except through dialogue? You're hardly going to use silent era style title cards.

I still think the scene setting was misjudged and overdone. The producers should have given a 9 p.m. BBC2 audience a bit more credit than they would have done for Blue Peter or MTV viewers. I also feel the murder/secret service subplot was not well integrated and not well handled in itself in the first episode.

Episode 2 wasn't perfect and you can see this sexism thing is a bit of an obsession for those involved. How likely is it that a 1956 producer would tell a secretary not to make tea for her boss? Still, the vast improvement means I'll actually be looking forward to this in the weeks to come, not just hoping it'll get better.

I'm glad I persevered - episode two was much better paced and I'm starting to warm to Freddie, Bel and even Hector... I'll forgive the slow and slightly unengaging first episode. [Though, I still think it may well have put a lot of people off...] I think this may well turn out to be one of the TV highlights of the year.

There is more plot development but its still feels slightly bloated although its still very colourful.

This was a fantastic step up. I was so pleased that Hector's character was thoughtfully fleshed out, and he's certainly my favourite character. My hopes of this being a good series have been confirmed, after a week's humming and hahring.

Never mind the width, feel the quality.

The central performances are great even if the costumes don't look scratchy enough and it does take a while to stand a heavyweight drama on its feet. We're getting there. I think, though I still think I could do without the MI6 subplot. If it's to last another series, they'll have to give that some legs and purpose or drop it entirely.

Crap dialogue, crap plot, some crap acting all copied from Hollyoaks; capped off with breathtakingly excellent tight (even pencil) skirts and Anna Chancellor. Also an unbelievably banal advert at the end to spoil the cliffhanger, if you aren't quick with the remote. Experienced COMbbc watchers always have it to hand five minutes before the nominal end.

Damn I missed it. But thanks for starting a thread about it as I'll tune in for next weeks.

It's been so panned by the critics, which seems to me unfair.
