Well, I liked it...

I did. Started off a bit ropey (well - very ropey, I thought) but I was all breathless with excitement for our final sixty minutes. Lovely red dress on Bel, by the way. Ooh, she is slinky. 3 cheers, I say.

I enjoyed it too, though I did spend quite a lot of the series rather confused. Still am a bit, actually, will need to watch final episode online again. I get the whole Clarence thing - that was a very weird ending! What would Freddy do? Write a story or not say a thing? But I'm still a bit muddled about Ruth's position in the whole thing. Who actually killed her & WHY exactly? Because she talked to Freddy? Did they say that she was used to 'convince' the dentist to poison Nasser? And why was it that Kish killed Peter Darrell, if they were colleagues? I wonder if I'm a bit thick.

Oh, Darrell was a double agent, RIGHT. That bit passed me by, I thought he'd just been caught out as a spy.

Yeah, I would think Kish would've been on MI6's to-do list too, but Fate (& Freddy) intervened there.

It has plenty of detractors on here and even the Radio Times was a bit disparaging about it. But, after a rather slow and slightly unengaging first episode, I warmed to it and really enjoyed it - original, fab acting, generally well-written and quite striking visually... Apart from the problematic first episode, my one complaint is the demonstration scene in episode five - you really do need more than six extras down an alley to recreate a major demo in central London.

What a dreadful anti-climax. In corridors as well! It was as if there wasn't much money after they'd paid for the cast so they panicked in case they had to fall back on imagination.

The plot was full of holes and the characters weren't believable, the identity of the mysterious spy was so obvious for a long time, that I actually was surprised when it was officially revealed - no crazy twist, really?
But the cast BBC managed to put together - I could watch them act for hours, no matter how bad the story. And it was stylish.
So, "The Hour" was for me a kind of a guilty pleasure: I know it is rather bad, but I want more anyway.

Definitely a rock solid first season (series, whatever). Stories about the media always intrigue me, but I sometimes wish that there was a more contemporary show similar to this. Modern News must have a lot of material for a good drama. In fact I just saw a documentary about manipulation and suggestion in the media today. It's called Programming the Nation, and it's definitely worth a peek. http://bitly.com/raMjYx
