Let's Get Talking!

So, the series premiered tonight in the UK, and Twitter basically exploded, but no one here is talking. Why???

Does anyone know how to flesh out the actual IMDB page for this series? Like attaching all the actors, putting in photos, etc? I have a feeling that if the page actually looked somewhat interesting and active, then people would come flocking to the discussion boards.

Anyone?

I still haven't seen it as I live in the US, but I can't wait, and I would love to hear what everyone has to say about it!

There's a contributor section where you can write a plot synopsis, create character pages etc but as I've never done that I feel a bit daunted by it.

I've just made my first thread/post here. I found it mixed. It was slow going but I know that the scene has to be set and the major characters introduced. I'm not sure that I yet connect with Saorise Ronan's character - the lead female - but the two male leads - Whishaw and West I enjoyed.

It's possibly a bit too different for enthusiastic discussion yet.

But I think it might turn out to be good enough for a bit of longevity.

It's the best thing the Beeb has done this year.

It piqued my interest. Will certainly watch again next week.

No, the best thing the BBC has done this year is Rom's other project, The Crimson Petal and the White. There's no arguing about that.

I do like this, though. I hope the script tones down its "SEXISM IS BAD" elements though. However, from reading the telly pages over the weekend (I study The Times' and then the Sunday Times' telly pages and compare them), next week's episode is better.

This only reaffirms my suspicions that historical accuracy is the only reason people follow Mad Men. ;)

"Look! It's just like the early 60s!"

- That's great. When does the plot start?

"Look! They're smoking and drinking whiskey and being sexist! So authentic!"

- Right, but nothing's happening-

"Now they're having affairs and their marriages are shams and everyone's wearing hats!"

- ...

I adore Mad Men and not because of the time period or how perfectly it shows the period, although it would have to be set then to show correctly how women were treated and how Madison ave advert firms were starting to rise due to TV's new found popularity. I lived in NYC then having been born in the early 50's and it was just like it is shown. I had a cousin marry an ad man,,very prim and proper and always with a coat and tie on. The stories are well written and acted, so you see there are many of us that watch it for it's cerebral genre and a few other things.

It took me three tries to get through the first ep of The Hour, even though it is based on our show "60 Minutes" which has been on since the 50's. This show is so well written and I couldn't catch all the words and no cc to help with the accents, but once I got through that part, I loved it and the remaining eps brought every thing together. Not a series for a slower minded person, they want a quick result and everything spelled out for them.

Also, it helped to know a bit of the historical background about the Suez Crisis and Hungarian Revolt which we knew about, but not the background knowledge that was hidden. I used to watch tv with my father and he kept up on things then and explained them to me, even though I was in elementary school. I also know someone who's family lived through it and had to escape to England. Very sad and the end of UK domination in the world..after not honoring their word to other countries they were defeated morally. The US was not much better...all ignoring the spread of imperialism at that time.
