Second series?

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/3759047/BBC-show-The-H our-is-back-for-a-second-series.html

It's looking good at the moment though in the article it does only say that the writer, Abi Morgan, wants a second series. Thoughts?

Can there be a second series? The show was pulled near the end of the final episode, Bel's been fired, & presumably Freddy too. I can't imagine after McCain & Clarence pulled the show mid-programme that it would simply be on as usual the following week.

I would like to see what happened to the characters though.

Well, Mr Ford Madox, this discerning American view has been watching and enjoying _The Hour_.

But given what I've been reading in this thread only proves once again that I need not ever watch another BBC production, given that if the show is in the slightest way interesting or expensively produced, BBC will cancel it. So much for government run television. As usual, anytime there is a relatively new show that I like, and find myself invested in, it is a good bet that BBC will stop producing it.

This show has/had good promise and knowing history as I do, there were many news stories just around the corner in the time period of the late 1950's early 1960's that could have been explored.

I broke a vow to myself to never watch a BBC production again because of the early cancellations of other shows I liked, just to give _The Hour_ a chance. I guess I will have to make another one and keep it this time. It is bad enough to only get 6 or 8 shows per series, per year, but to waste even that small amount of time is ridiculous.

This series along with "Luther" did very well for BBC America, and I really like their new series "Copper" and it's doing very well for BBC America.

I don't see why the series being brought back for a second series would have anything to do with the BBC America audience the program is produced for the UK market any airings in other countries is just extra money, since they have commercials to pay for programs on certain channels the UK but the programs still get produced.

Some UK series don't get distributed internationally and still get renewed.

The distribution and licensing in other countries is just gravy money for any series regardless of the country of it's intended audience.

Beside public television is hurting for money, distribution through other avenues makes better business sense. it's the entertainment business regardless of where it's produced.

The way it ended, it looked like a mini series which I actually like.

I thought the way that episode six ended was very ambiguous - it was a kind of closure to the running storylines, but was sufficiently open to enable the concept to be picked up again if a further series is commissioned ...

The show could continue if Clarence grovels, and lets Bel and Freddie take the rap ... he seemed very unwilling to excuse Freddie at the end, and remember that he has an ulterior motive for the show to continue ... and the blatant Political censorship of pulling the show live off air could have caused uproar at the time and could have backfired on the Government so badly that McCain is finished ... perhaps it would be seen to be best to let the show continue with a new production team (more BrightStones ?) and tighter editorial control by Clarence <g>. Bel and Freddie could be around in the background somehow ... perhaps setting up a rival programme for ITV as Associated-Rediffusion were up and running in London and Bel and Freddie would have some kudos in the Media industry ... Hector might have pangs of conscience over bottling out, turn into a real journo, dump the mannequin of a wife and shack up with Bel for action on and off the screen ... there's plenty of mileage in Sissy and Isaac and I wouldn't trust Lix (what a name!) with a bottle of Scotch in a cupboard with Freddie or any man ... or woman ...

The show has wheels ... it could run ...

Not sure there'll be more. More because Wishaw, West and Garai are an expensive trio than difficulties with the story.

After all, Suez did bring the Eden government down and opposition to the Suez intervention was all the rage among the chattering classes at the time.

But the writer already stated in the interviews that she has clear idea for second series, all depends on BBC decision now.

reply

I suspect that it's Dominic West who's the most expendable to the storyline, and the one to go if they have clashes of availability. There's a Freddie/Bel romance in the waiting for sure and a lot more potential story about Lix to be written.
Also, Freddie hasn't decided what to do about Clarence and I'm sure there's a way to get them all out of the *beep* somehow. I wouldn't be at all surprised if series two starts with Clarence having killed himself and thus saved Freddie and Bel from most of the blame.

reply

Lix angle can be explored...a much much complex and mature woman than Bel!!! BTW I think ben Wishaw is as talented as Benedict Cumberbatch!!!

reply

Maybe ye olde whatever amount of years later type of scenario ? Or a before ? how they got to what they are now ?

Do we know id the second series was cofirmed ?

reply

I have only seen a few episodes of The Hour here in Australia, and I do hope that there will be a second season. It is gripping drama.

There will definitely be a second series. This was reported back in October.

I really can't understand how anyone would have any question about what Freddie will do with Clarence. Of course he's going to run the story, and Clarence is going to prison! Freddie is a patriot. A true patriot. These are the people who genuinely love and want to protect their countries. The critic. The cross-examiner. The scrutinizer. Freddie loves Democracy. He's not going to let a communist spy run rampant, much less continue to exert control within the BBC. It would be an absolute disconnect if he did.

reply

Don't forget either that Freddie has a personal investment - Clarence's nomination of Ruthie led straight to her death, which was the single most compelling reason for his tenacity in uncovering the Brightstones.

Clarence would have been unlikely to have gone to jail. He wasn't senior enough to be covered up, as Blunt was, and SIS certainly wouldn't want him there. He would have been killed and his death covered up as a suicide.

Lisa Greenwood tweeted last week that the second series should begin airing on June 26th!
