I don't think it's his baby. Marnie said something about not having been the perfect wife after they "broke up", meaning after Hector was released from prison and Marnie said their marriage was over.

Not his.. he's sterile.. and they have been on the outs for months with Hector sleeping on the couch.
That's why he called her clever for getting what she wanted.. they both know the baby is not his, but they will obviously stay and raise the baby as their own.

Yes, his reply was very in keeping with that war generation, I was actually quite pleased that it managed to square the circle between modern sensibilities and old-fashioned decency. This seems to have happened more often than we might like to think in the past.
