After dubious promotion and rubbish viewing figures, series 3 is under attack. We need to show the BBC there is still an audience for this kind of show. Please help by signing the petition below.
The link doesn't seem to be active on my mobile. I'll sign up tomorrow when I get on my laptop. I have loved this series, we really must try and get it a third series, if only to see the wonderful Peter Capaldi and Anna Chancellor again (I'm huge fan of both, I think they're fantastic)!
Really hate sullying this idea, as I love The Hour so much as a series and agree that the second is better than the first.
But.
(less spoilery smoke and mirrors argument)
The end of season 2 made me think that in season 3 a big part of what makes the series as a whole so great would be lacking.
(Big Spoiler Alert version)
As much as I love the three central characters (and actors) together - let alone Lix, series 2-era Marnie, more of Sey and now also Randall - for me sadly, the potential prospect of no Freddie = No deal. Sorry to say. (even if it is a good sign that Ben Whishaw's career's going even more stellar.) Freddie for me lights a fire under the whole thing and it'd be a very, very tough gig to replace a character like that, especially with the right actor to pull it off.
i agree; i think its more likely that he lives (though im well aware of all the little threads that could lead one to presume this would be the end for him). i think, especially in the first episode of season 2, that it was too well established that freddie is the heart of The Hour. It would be impossible to move on from his death if they decided to continue on with the show without Ben Whishaw. They could, though, decide not to renew.
i also think that examining what the beating does to Freddie's journalistic gumption in the event that he does survive and the show continues, will be an interesting storyline to pursue.
I watched the final episode of the season last night and saved on DVR as I need to watch again. The ending was a bit murky but I had the feeling Freddie survived and "Moneypenny" was on her way to him. Am I an eternal optimist?
Anyway, if Freddie doesn't survive I would not want another season without him. Let's hope he makes it and we get a third season.
plus tv series have a one clear pattern, when they want someone dead, you see them dead, when they want you to wonder but ultimately the person survive, they have those scenes where you don't really know :-)
Mrexfromtheleft - I'm not, *but* they left it open-ended. My point is that for me, it depends on whether or not he lives/Ben Whishaw signs up for a third series.
Does anyone know when the BBC might make a decision? Or if Ben Whislaw has indicated whether he'd return, if asked? Or if any of the other actors involved have indicated anything regarding the future of the series?
I agree with a previous comment. I really enjoy the show but would only want to see it continue with Ben Whishaw still on board. This is a situation where the ball is well and truly in the actor's court. I hope he decides to come back for one more season.
The three leads are all fantastic but Freddie Lyon is the central character. They have left it open for him to survive but I would not be at all surprised to find out they filmed an as yet unseen scene where he dies just as Rowley arrives.
I don't think it's up to Ben Whishaw whether or not the series continues. The BBC decided to cancel the show. Whishaw has been very supportive of the online campaign to save the show.
