Open Concept

During most episodes the couples what some sort of open concept. I find it hard to believe that the idea of an open floorplan did not enter their minds when signing the dotted line on the contracts of the house they purchased with walled-off rooms. Most couples say it is because they need to watch their children while in the kitchen. How on earth did so many of us survive our mommys cooking with a wall and corner separating her view of us? Not to mention, I hope all of these open-concept people have really neat and tidy kitchens.

I used to have it in our large house in Texas, it was OK. Now we live in a 1920s flat in San Francisco; and I don't have a problem with the separate rooms. Maybe because this place is half the size of our house in Texas (went from 2700 sq ft to about 1400). I think I prefer the charm of this over the open concept I had in my modern house.

I'm not sure I even get the whole open concept thing - at some point it's just plain odd to have the kitchen, living room, and dining room all one large room. Our current kitchen has a peek-through to the living room and that's open enough for me. I want to be able to cook and clean in peace without people watching.

Agreed. Downton Abbey is plenty "open concept" for me.

People/sheeple are told by HGTV etc, that they must have an "open concept" (along with stainless steal which I have had and when I moved chose against it because it's a pain) to be chic. Most of the homes shown on the programme are small under 2000 square feet and it does give an illusion of space. I myself do not like the open concept idea. I entertain often and feel that dinners are a drama and my dinning room is the stage. I want my guests to be excited about what is put before them, and not see what goes on in the kitchen. I was taught to clean as you go when cooking, so I can cook dinner for 12 and my kitchen is spotless, until the time the meal goes out. Unless you are good at this, why would you want your guests to see the dirty dishes piled in the sink after dinner or the pots and pans. Secondly, any cooking even with a good exhaust system will produce grease and odors. I can close off my kitchen and these odors do not permeate the rest of my house. Regarding the kids...let them play on there own without mommie watching every move.

Except that during those times when you want to enjoy a good bottle of wine, watch the big game, AND cook, all at the same time, you've kind of painted yourself into a corner.

All it should take is burning the popcorn in the microwave a couple of times to cure people of wanting an open concept.

LOL what kills me is the women (it's mostly the women) who have never even boiled water who then say they want an updated kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances... What in god's name for?

reply

The only reason they want that is to show off. "Look, I have high end appliances so my friends and neighbors will envy me"

reply

Because we want it. I don't really cook much, but when I redid my kitchen, I wanted the best appliances I could afford, and I HAD to have granite counter tops (if you get something you really like, it's PRETTY!!!!!! lol) I also went with a 48 inch fridge/freezer (separate units, so 24" each) because I don't cook much and wanted the extra storage space a 24" freezer gives (and I wanted an automatic ice and water dispenser). I could have gone with a 24" freezer with a 18" fridge since I did separate units, but that would have hit my OCD need for uniform looks, so I got both at 24". My kitchen turned out BEAUTIFUL and I LOVE being in it now, and I actually do cook more than I used to. And I only did stainless steel because black was not an option. However, I'm just not into the whole stainless steel fad everyone seems to be in now. Also, even though they may not cook/I may not always cook, it goes a long way toward the resale value of the house, because it's kitchens and bathrooms that sell a house, so that is where you want to spend your money if you're going to spend it.

Not to mention those who see these huge kitchens and all they say is "There's not enough counter space"...how much space do you need? You know any parties they have will be catered anyway, lol.

I was watching Bang for your Buck and the realtor looked dubiously at the stove - the largest, nicest, cleanest stove I've ever seen in my life (and yes, it was stainless steel)- and said,"This mid-range stove is a problem. In this area buyers will expect top-of-the-line appliances." They then gave the price: $3500. On what planet is that a cheap stove??* And yes, it was a nice neighborhood, but it wasn't freaking Rodeo Drive.

All of these shows have made me abhor granite counter tops! I will avoid installing granite in my home at any cost!!! I am so sick of even hearing the word "granite." Talk about the epitome of ubiquitous!!! Argh ..

Granite countertops and stainless steel appliances are the Formica countertops and turquoise appliances of the 2010's. A decade from now, they will look completely dated. In 50 years, they will be early 21st century retro chic.

There's not much you can do about countertops because anything you get will look dated in a few years, but white appliances are never really in style and so never really go out of style.

Rather than lust after "open concept" they should just put their kids in bubbles.
