... the bar gig? So the people cheered for him to play his old song. Perform it and then perform the new one. I know that he felt sad that they didn't seem to care, but what did he expect? He sings soulless songs for decades and then people will just accept him singing something deeper?

That was the point. It's one thing to turn over a new leaf behind the curtain, but to fully come out, knowing he needed to tour to be able to provide for himself, and his family... he got scared. he got afraid to share that, he regressed to give the people what they want.
It's hard work being on stage, and NOT just giving in, and giving them what they think they want...
