My basic problem with this movie....

...is that the Danny Collins character doesn't come across as an artist.
He has all the chutzpah of a successful car salesman.

As Robert Hughes said: "The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize."

Pretty well enjoyed everything else about it. I suspect Giselle Eisenberg is the new Dakota Fanning.

pretty sure that was the point, go back through the interview, leading up to him being terrified of being rich and famous... then to the lines lennon wrote to him, about staying true to his music, and not selling it out... then his existential crisis, because he realizes just how truly he has sold his music, and himself out... he oft repeats about what kind of a real artist he would have been if he had received this letter when it was sent, if he had connected with lennon....
instead, he became a schmaltzy, schmucky MC.... who hasn't even written in 30 years.
His time in NJ, connecting with family, and other real people, this was portrayed as a real artist... Someone becoming grounded in the real world, and writing from a place of honesty, and purity, while going through some truly dark stuff.
That was legitimately the best portrayal of an artist possible.
If you couldn't see his doubt, I mean come on, he was running lyrics past Mary, someone who confessed to not caring for his music, as well as not being really educated on musical theory... Thats something a real artist, who is doubting their work does.
Note, the moment he chickened out, and went back to his old way, Sophie and Busywork showed up, as if by magic.... and it all crashed down.
