Do you think there will ever be...(spoiler)

...a black killer in the franchise? In this day and age, it would be more realistic instead of sticking to the all-white psycho trope in yet another instalment.

reply

Maybe. But they'd need to make sure a black writer was involved for sure, so it's done right. Because that'd be tricky to touch. Because if it's just a black killer, then they run the risk of it looking racist. They could somehow tie race into the motive, which could be interesting, but also easy to do wrong and have it come across poorly. So, it's basically impossible to do without screwing it up and it somehow ending up political.

Of course, that said, they could be working up to it being Chad and/or Mindy in 7. I really, really doubt it, but you never know. Would at least make for a great surprise and make up for letting all four live again. But, they seem too tight to do that. But again, surprise. If it was Mindy they could even work in a line about how "I missed the reveal monologue the last two times, and I am NOT this time, because now I'm giving it"

I don't see why they need a Black writer to write a Black killer. I mean, more diverse input behind-the-scenes of these films would be a good unto itself, but I don't see why only Black filmmakers can portray villainous Black characters.

As for Chad and Mindy, I hope they take more risks with those two characters next time, rather than take the apparently sentimental approach they did with the 'Core Four', on this occasion.

That sounds like something a racist would say! CANCEL THIS GUY IMMEDIATELY!

reply

What? Why would having a black killer be touchy? Surely society isn’t that far gone!

reply

Not in a million universes.

reply

Technically there has been a black killer in the franchise. But I just don't really care about checking boxes like that. It doesn't help or hurt the story in any way.

reply

Who is the black killer here because I surely missed that movie.

reply

I'm pretty sure the closest the franchise has ever gotten to a minority killer is Tony Revolori (who's of Guatemalan descent), but since he wasn't the *main* villain, does he strictly count? I mean, he was evil/was *a* Ghostface, but just not one of *the* Ghostfaces, so to speak, but all the others have been white, right? Mikey Madison, one of the Scream 5 killers, looks a bit Asian to me, but according to Wikipedia, she's simply white/Jewish.

reply

Eh, but neither are black though, so we still haven't had that yet. Joel from Scream 2 would be a good choice since he is black and a familiar character. I feel like this series should have had returning characters turn bad and be killers than making and establishing new ones all the time we only meet in the current movie they debut in. One of the biggest things that could have made Scream 6 better to me is if they made Kirby the killer, something they should have done in Scream 5, and not only that but because she is a likeable character, she surrenders and gets arrested, making her the first killer to not only be a returning character but to not die by the hands of the heroes. How different that would have been.

reply

I guess we're not bothering with spoilers...LOL

Yeah, I'd have liked Kirby as the killer too. I think it was inevitable that Wayne was the killer, in view of his son dying (there *had* to be something more to that story, and since Quinn was *supposedly* dead, we weren't likely to get it from her...), but I was hoping for a team-up between him and Kirby (although that wouldn't explain why he requested her file...unless it was to tinker with it, for her *benefit* somehow), or for a complete surprise whereby Wayne *wasn't* the killer, despite every sign pointing to him (kind of like how Cotton Weary and Derek, in Scream 2, were made to look so blatantly suspicious, despite both being innocent).

As for Joel, I so like his character, that I'd be disappointed if he came back only to be a killer. It would be too left-field, even for this franchise.

Scream season 3.

reply

Scream season 3 had a black killer. Not a movie but the Scream tv series is still part of the Scream franchise. The OP didn't specify we need a black killer in the movies, but part of the franchise which happened in season 3.

reply

Season 3 was dog shit.

reply

They need to do it. Supposedly, Elise Neal was originally planned to be one of the killers in Scream 2 (not that I'd have necessarily wanted that, since I quite liked her character, although I do think the actress could have pulled it off).

Black actors and commentators have spoken about how they like playing villainous roles/the acting opportunities/fun they get in playing the baddie, and the Scream films aren't really to be taken too seriously, so I don't feel that a minority villain would reflect poorly on real-life POC. Unfortunately, as enjoyable as the new films are, the (I believe, white) filmmakers seem much more wedded to a 'woke agenda' than Wes Craven ever was. Craven was a thoughtful progressive liberal filmmaker, but he thankfully didn't feel beholden to any fads or corporately-approved agendas, and just did his own thing (which often turned out to be much more complex and socially-conscious than a lot of the lily-livered pandering we see today).

reply

Pretty sure the original Scream 2 script had a black killer, actually.
