So...what happened to Jet Li?

He was there in the beginning for like 2 minutes. And then the rest of the movie, he was gone. Did I miss something?

reply

well in first movie, he did said need money for something.
probably related to that.

reply

bump.. does anyone knoe why he left?
almost felt like lets get rid of the only other asian to introduce the asian chick

reply

What I don't like about these movies is that I think they treat Jet Li like a joke in these movies.

He's the chinese guy that does kung fu and flips and that's all he's good for.

They don't include him in scenes being with the rest of the boys on equal terms.
It seems he's just the non essential asian guy used for kung fu and then left at that.

reply

I agree that Jet gets treated as a joke.

In the first one he gets beaten by Dolph who basically just wins with some basic power moves. It’s not as if Dolph does some nice counter (which he is well capable of) or Jet makes a mistake.

Essentially Dolph just becomes He-Man while Jet suddenly loses the ability to move.

reply

I also agree Jet is treated as a joke.

Lara Croft Himiko! The First Sun Queen! This is Yamatai.

He's not really downplayed any more than some of the other cast, the real "protagonists" so to speak of the flicks is Statham and Stallone, and the rest are kind of the crew...actually, I think Li has more parts in Expendables 1 than Crews or Couture, his one on one bit with Lundgren was kind of the highlight of the movie for me.

Yeah, Li vs Dolph was one of the highlights of the film to me, that & seeing Li & Statham saving Stallone in the tunnel, that scene was so awesome.

Yeah, great scenes.🐭

Evidently you've watched the films about once and didn't pay much attention to come to that conclusion. In the first film he did hang around with the boys in fact after Stallone and Statham (Who were the main focus) he had the most screen time. Couture is a guy with a funny ear who can do MMA and Crews a big black guy with a gun that shouts. Don't see why you see Li as any less significant.

As for the sequel the reason Li has little screen time and Statham is missing for a huge chunk is a little thing called scheduling. So they wrote around that. Li had a limited time to shoot and could only film in China. That means Li was never actually on the same continent as Stallone at any point during the shoot. The fact the scenes work is a magic of editing.

the fight itself between dolph and jet was good nothing over done about it as in terms of capabilities.. what dolph did was completely plausible as he did apply karate moves to try and counter li's attack but still ended up winning by over powering him with his greater strength.

nothing outrageous really.

reply

He was signed on to do Flying Swords of Dragon Gate apparently at the time, so because of the scheduling conflicts he was kind of contractually obligated to do the other movie already and they had to minimize his role...consequently Flying Swords of Dragon Gate is pretty good too if you like that sort of flick :)

I actually came to the IMDb forums just to see if someone had an answer for this.

By the time the credits rolled I was like "...wait, I don't think I even saw Jet Li all that much in this movie. He just disappeared."

It would've been better off if they had wrote him off for the second one. Not exactly kill him but say he was on vacations or whatever. Because the way they put him in this movie was basically snubbing him. Thanks to this thread I know that wasn't intentional now, but the way he just disappeared out of nowhere with no explanation was just *beep*

It is in the trivia.
