The Maltese Falcon is a good one.

While not actually from the 1940s, the game borrows a lot from movies like LA Confidential and Chinatown.

I think LA Confidential is the most influential movie as it was more cops than dicks. I love film noir and the absolute definition of the genre is "Double Indemnity" where the lead is an insurance salesman who gets manipulated by a femme fatale but is being tracked by his friend an insurance investigator like Kelso is when you first play him.

If you like the vice world that Earle is involved look no further than "The Big Sleep". Crazy plot, sizzling dialogue, fantastic atmosphere, sexual chemistry which is hard to match and Bogie on incredible form, almost as good as he is in "The Maltese Falcon".

I would love to see the game as a film or TV series complete with seat of the pants car chases.

Double Indemnity, definitely. The insurance building in this game looks almost exactly like the one in that movie

LA Confidential

The Black Dahlia (those two are not actually made in the 40s, however)

The Maltese Falcon

The Big Sleep

All of those are good bets

After recently watching The Third Man, I had to come back to this thread. The ending of that movie almost made me think I was playing this game

Gangster Squad
The Untouchables
The Maltese Falcon
Zodiac (this film is set in the 70's but it feels very familiar when you compare it to the game)

Fear not the darkness, but welcome its embrace.
