'The Drop' is everything this film tried to be.
'The Drop' showed how it should be done.
The only good thing about KTS is the acting, everything else falls short.

I don't know if i agree with you on your initial point. I love both movies but they're totally different in terms of theme, setting, plot, etc. The only shared traits are two idiots wearing weird masks that rob the mob at some point and both have James Gandalfini playing a mobster past his prime.
I do, however, agree that The Drop is a better film. It's got more emotional impact and it's a bit more subtle with its intentions and is nowhere near as cynical as Killing Them Softly. Though there's no doubt about it, the acting in both movies is outta sight. I watch both movies often and think more people should watch them. I love 'em!
jeez i loved both films... i found the drop to be more FRIENDLY, and KTS to be more Comic realism than actual gangster *beep* but upon research THE DROP is more innacurate and plays out like a love letter... KTS is what criminals experience. desperate actions for desperate gain... also the accents, (im an Aussie) are realistic and more to the point a BOGAN like Ben Mendelson played the role to a T... were as i found TOM HARDY very hesitant to act as an englishmen, propably because the studio didnt want an accent.... but every time i hear englishmen or Australians doing American accents, i just wish the casting director could have told the studio were the actor was from and in tern, flip the script just enough so the character can act his or her best..... to me Killing them Softly has a larger impact... and Tom Hardy is my favourite actor ATM
shareI agree with Mark. They're trying to be very different movies, even though they're similar in quite a few ways. KTS is a very cynical take and uses crime as an allegory about modern American finances. Everyone is lazy, or incompetent, or disloyal. Whereas The Drop is more of a straight character study.
They're both fairly small movies, with good acting, that focus on how some small time crooks messing up a fairly simple scam and the results.
I enjoyed The Drop more, I felt it was more cohesive, I felt like it hit all it's buttons. To me KTS was uneven in the sense that at least in the cut we got, it can't decide if it's a movie about crime or it's a commentary. It's both, but the way they split the focus it did both of them only sorta okay. It came off as muddled.
I think it would've been a lot better had it either just gone for it in either direction. That either the whole movie should have been the last scene, where the subtext was text, or that it should've almost entirely cut the C-Span stuff and just been a slick crime thriller. Still it's a really well done movie, that's less than the sum of its parts, but still okay.
I much prefer this to the Drop. The dialogue in KTS particularly delivered by Gandolfini and the scenes with Jenkins and Pitt is outstanding.
shareThe Drop is a solid film. I give it a 7/10. Killing Them Softly is a very good film and I give it an 8/10. The characters are more interesting and the direction and cinematography are excellent. The story itself is just more compelling and told expertly and tightly. The Drop lagged in a lot of spots and didn't always keep my attention. Still really enjoyed it though.
"This life's hard, man, but it's harder if you're stupid!"
Hey man, your username is "Eddie_Fingers"...it's no surprise to me that you prefer the film based on George V. Higgins' stuff :) hahah. I love KTS and The Drop
shareHaha! No, I've never actually read any of Higgins' work. The Friends of Eddie Coyle just happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I have read a lot of Dennis Lehane's stuff and I think he's great.

I've just recently read Eddie Coyle and Cogan's trade(Killing them Softly) and if you like those movies -- which you do -- or are just a fan of Boston Noir you seriously have to check them out. Cogan's trade especially as it expands on some of the characters like Scoot Mcnairy's Frankie, which was great.
I've only read some Dennis Lehane but I plan to read more since I love all the films based on his work. Oddly enough, the version of The Friends of Eddie Coyle that I bought comes with an introduction written by Lehane!
Eddie Coyle is a really great novel. You could read it in half a day
shareThe original quote is: "Life is hard, it's harder when U R stupid."
shareThe Drop has nothing on this. Total sleeping pill while this is a quite alright soprano-ish film.
shareOf course, you had your little romantic sub plot in the drop. Go champ!
shareIMO "The Drop" is as over rated as "Killing Them Softly" is under rated.
Love Tom Hardy but "The Drop" was just a slow melodrama with pseudo gravitas but nothing to say.
KTS trumps it on nearly every level - ie: writing, dialogue, subtext, directorial vision, (arguably) acting and (definitely) jet black comedy.
If only you could see what I have seen with your eyes.
Good to see folks discussing maturely in an IMDb thread for a change.
and I too think both are very different movies. The Drop being more of a character study with mafia environment, while KTS is actually about mafia gangs and serves as a social commentary.
I liked The Drop more since it is more rewarding and complete as a film, while KTS has a lot of good ideas in and great actors but somehow doesn't work as a whole film. A film with good intentions but doesn't stay focused to its plot.
Thanks, I'm going to check out The Drop.
I found Killing Them Softly like a build-up to nothing, and a cynical pay-off to stroke Brad Pitt's ego. The ending felt like the mid-point of the movie and not only was the only person worth rooting for setup in the most obvious way imaginable, but the padding out of its rather short runtime with lots of pointless ramblings and elongated scenes that went nowhere completely robbed this film of any kind of lasting enjoyment.
Thanx cygur! I agree that the dialogue in KTS was HARD to follow, so I did a LOT of rewind/replay in this movie to catch the meaning of most of it. A 30 second rewind feature on my Oppo player would have been great for this movie! Some DVRs have that function which is great for watching RECORDED NFL games.
