I just don't get the love for VEEP

I should preface this with: I have never understood the appeal of Julie Louis-Dreyfus.
I feel like she gets much more in the way of comedic kudos then she really warrants. I just flat out have never found her likable or funny. And i know it seems like her Seinfeld character and the character here are not meant to be likable, but i find her unbearable. Like, i see her on the tv and I feel compelled to change the channel immediately. She just irks me.

When VEEP debuted, I gave the show about 3 episodes worth of my time, and then i gave up.

I just find the humour incredibly predictable and forced. On Sunday nights i tune into HBO for Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley, and then i have to find a half-hour to kill until John Oliver... I always managed to catch the last 5 minutes of VEEP as I wait, and i just am aghast at how much TALENT in showing up on here. People like Hugh Laurie and Gary Cole? What a waste!

This show is like a crime against humanity for having so much talent in 1 place wasted on tedious, predictable "faux-intelligent" humour.

You saw three episodes, 4 years ago, and you're still complaining about it? Get a *beep* life, loser.

Three episodes?

Uh, yeah, that's pretty clearly what the OP said.

Not all shows (or actors) are for everyone. Luckily, in 2015, there's no lack of other programming to watch. Personally, I can't stand Silicon Valley. So, I don't watch it, but I don't waste my valuable time complaining about it either.

reply

Hate to bring this up but you just did waste your time to complain about it ... :D

reply

I wouldn't worry about it*, comedy is highly subjective, and we all have performers throughout entertainment that just turn us off. And the first three episodes of Veep, especially the premiere, were not among their best. I almost blew it off, but it's great!

(* - I know you don't "worry about it", it's just an expression.)

Personally I was of the same opinion after the first few episodes - I came into Veep expecting an American Thick of It, which in many ways it is, but cleverly re-geared for an American audience. However, the first few episodes suffer from something of an identity crisis, trying too hard to be Thick of It in America, rather than the intelligent adaptation that it becomes.

Stick with the show ; it'll grow on you.

I didn't start watching the show until recently. I"m so lucky because this means I have 4 seasons to binge watch.

JLD is genius and now I see why she has won the Emmy for four years in a row. Amy Poehler and Lisa Kudrow - also genius - but nobody does it with the speed and finesse of JLD. She is amazing. I rewind scenes over and over because she's that good.

reply

I do like Dreyfus, and I think she's good in this, but I'm not a huge fan of the show. I do find things in it to like, which is why I have seen every episode from day one. (To the contributor expressing disgust at the OP "wasting (his)valuable time complaining about it: it's not a fan site, and opinions both positive and negative are not only allowed, but entertaining - and by the way, you wasted YOUR valuable time complaining about the OP)

My main beef with Veep is that it's far, far too slick and pleased with itself. I mean, does there HAVE to be a joke in EVERY line? It gets too intense and overpowering - one portion of tiramisu is great, but to be force fed spoonful after spoonful...And it's not like it's sharp political satire (all the time) - it's mainly name-calling and silly-nickname-giving.

reply

It's gotten a lot better since season 1 but if you didn't like it that much it's clearly not for you. Its type humor is not universally loved. I can't understand your hatred of JLD, she's the most likeable actress on tv.

This show is so much like a draft spec i wrote about a decade ago. Really cool to see that someone built a better mousetrap when i never quite got mine off the ground.

Agreed 100%.

I never watched this show because of that very reason. Now that I am all out of things to watch as I wait for my regular shows to come back on, I needed something to pass the time and started watching this since I have heard good things about it. I'm on Season 1. The show isn't that bad so far (glad it's half hour episodes too), and some of the other characters/dialogue are good - but I find it hard watching Dreyfus, for the reasons you stated.

Nothing quite like the opinion of someone who watches "The View."
