What actually happened to the killer's mom? (spoilers)

She was driving and then just froze , like became catatonic. That is why she died falling into the ice because she couldn't move. She didn't even react to the cold water.
But why? Did she want to die? Was this some unrealistic kind of seizure? People don't just turn into statues out of the blue.

Yes, she wanted to die. She and her son were shown being violently abused by a man at the beginning. And when the man drove off, the mother and son still attempted to get him to stop, part of the warped thinking of abuse victims. Shortly after that, I saw her intentionally drive the car out onto the ice. As the car sank, she wasn't catatonic, she was looking intensely at her son.
