Bogus arguments

I get the feeling Iris's and Regina's arguments against the Lil Wayne costume were supposed to make us "really think" about the situation and see why it was so hurtful. The problem is, neither one stands up to any scrutiny.

Regina makes a comparison to someone who dresses up as some gross stereotype of a Latino and calls it a costume. But Mingo wasn't dressing up as a gross stereotype of a black person. He was - accurately - dressing up as a specific celebrity who actually does present himself that way. There was nothing mean or gratuitous about it to suggest he was mocking black people in general.

Iris shares the cruel things she's experienced around campus: the Confederate flag, etc. The person who did that clearly meant her harm, and she has every right to be offended and report them to the proper authorities. But how does that give her the right to take it out on someone who DIDN'T mean her any harm - as you can clearly tell every time Mingo talks about it?

You can see they kind of tried to be fair to both sides, but in the end... really shallow reasoning.

I give Regina a pass because she was looking at the situation as an outsider after social media already got to it and flipped it. Iris made no sense. She knew exactly what actually happened and still overreacted. I was kinda offended that the writers think that black ppl are petty and that we overreact about dumb stuff

reply

Ironically... I just overreacted about a teenage tv show on abc family, lol

Don't give Regina a pass because Mingo was clearly not declaring himself to be black. If she even got that impression, she's dumb as hell and Daphne was dumb to not even call her out on that lousy statement.

But we as the audience know the true story of what went down. Regina only seen it after people painted it as a hate crime and talked crap about it on the Internet to sway her opinion. I'm not defending her character... but I'll give her a pass

It would have made more sense if Regina had of given an example of if someone had of dressed like a Latino singer like Shakira or Carlos Santana for instance or maybe Daphne could have counter argued that point.
