Am I the only person who doesn't think they broke up??

I have to agree that these two seem a bit immature throughout the movie and make their fair share of mistakes, but they are young (right out of college) and I would expect those mistakes from anyone living in a larger city like LA and working in creative fields (both of them).

What people continue to miss is the bond they have since the beginning on the movie. This bond is something you can find in next to no one in life and it's a bond that continues to bring them back together. I think this bond is called love. It's not just being in love as we see 'in love' wears the duration of the movie but it's a bond deep down that with communication will keep two people together forever. These two have that bond and can continue to look elsewhere, but you will never find that bond again.

The ending of the movie isn't a breakup (I mean in all fairness it could be interpreted either way) but I see it as a piece where this bond that holds the couple together continues to do so and once the shock of the move and everything wears off these two will continue to find that bond through stubbornness, love, happiness, etc.

These two have love and support, it's not always tickling and the first time you meet in love, but it goes further than that and I see it in this relationship.

I know this is in depth, but I guess with some real world experience applied and not just all the fluffy movie romance, I think this relationship to me feels as real as any I've seen in the majority of movies I've watched. Love takes time and energy, not just being in love and happy, but a lot of other factors play in.

Love this movie! RIP Anton, such an amazing young actor. A true inspiration.

I like your explanation that this love movie seems more realistic than other bubble gum movies. The vibe I got at the end is that they can only be in love with each other when they are apart. They miss each other when they are away and when they are together they snarl at each other. Another thing is both had being disloyal to each other which says something about the two. They let down Simon and Sam which is quite selfish and I feel they will do the same to one another.

I actually found the scene where they are at a vacation just before Anna suppose to leave back home and she is trying to read and he is yapping to her about tuna fish. At that moment I almost felt that they can’t be together. They don’t know how to respect each others time alone while being together which I feel is the reason they can only exist when they are apart from one another.

The elements that you mention that keeps them close to one another (the flashbacks in the last scene) are individual moments that they love but they are not love tied to one another. That’s how I saw their relationship.

Had to go back to that scene because it seemed so insignificant to me that I couldn't even remember him talking about tuna fish :D

She was just a little distracted by her thoughts about having to go back soon. Nothing being really that portentous at this point, I think ;)

reply

Agreed, I found that scene rather nice and refreshing. There was a child like sense to both of them which is important in a relationship.

Have to agree with the post above, although I wouldn't read this much into that tuna fish scene.

In short (other) words:

Their bond was more or less strong as long as they had to fight the obstacles keeping them apart.
As soon as these were - finally and somehow unexpectedly - out of the way, it started to fade .....

I love the idea that Jacob now had a chance to open his heart for sad Sam to fully commit to her.
Anna would go back to her career in England (which she instantly missed) and start all over again.

reply

Do you really think Sam would take him back though? He "left" her twice.

reply

Idk, that's a good question. He did mess up (both did) but is there a right equation for how a relationship could work? Tough to answer.

but is there a right equation for how a relationship could work?

I don't think there is. And that's why I think the movie and its ending are great. Things like this are never black and white.

reply

It is all the guilt they felt.

reply

Definitely lots of guilt.

Sad ending. As with any film, I would have liked some closure. But ending it this way did speak volumes and leave me thinking a lot, so in that sense it was a great ending.
There's no definite answer as to what happens though because the movie ends... We're left to wonder what could happen.
It tells me that the time apart, and to a lesser extent the other relationships they had, took their toll and left them wondering if they could get back to that place they were before. They'd been living their lives apart for so much of the time. I think we can still hope that their love is strong enough and they can resurrect it and make their lives work. They already found they couldn't live without eachother. I think we can hope.

reply

Good point, definitely hope left. But a lot less than most movie-esque romance films would usually give.

For me the last scene was about accepting it was over. That too much had happened in the time apart, that thier lives were lived in different places, and that they were no longer in love. It's a sad, hard, honest ending.
