At least four couples left my showing tonight, heh. NO SPOILERS
Just got back from a fun evening showing. A 7PM show on a Saturday evening in a fairly active area of L.A. opening week was maybe 1/4 full, but I was surprised at how many older people there were.
If I had to pick one word to describe the film it would be "uneven." IMO it was beautifully shot, used a pulsing electronic score very effectively, Demi Moore really stretched herself out for the role, brava. However, as I mentioned in yatzo's thread, my experience of the film was a cycle of awe > suspense > eye-rolling at the heavy-handed preachiness > shock > over the top hilarity. It seemed to keep repeating faster as the film progressed. Having gone in to the theater blind, I laughed way more than expected.
Which brings me to the subject: as things got wilder, I couldn't help but notice an older couple sitting right in front of my friend and I, and they seemed to be having a fun time, laughing. Then in the last act, my buddy and I took turns pointing out couples leaving the theater, which added to the hilarity of the experience, and finally maybe fifteen minutes before the end, the couple in front of us bailed, and they were couple number four we counted.
If you like Lynch, Cronenberg, old Peter Jackson, with visual/score elements of Kubrick, it's worth a watch. Warning to the squeamish.
tl;dr: uneven but fun. 7/10.
