Celebrating Stupidity
So many problems with this one. Spoilers aplenty.
Hey what about Toby Jones- a good actor- his character is supposed to be a brainiac, but he's dumbfounded by Weaver's character reading the cards in his glasses reflection. C'mon Toby....you're better than this.
Hey how about that scene with the fragile toilet fixtures? What was the goal of the henchman? If it was to kill Buckley...he just lost interest after breaking so many sinks and toilets.
As others have commented, this movie takes place in a world where a small psychic research project is the MOST IMPORTANT step ever in history.
Note that you can get into observe any experiment by roughing up the lead researcher and threatening him.
After the lead researcher lets you in, against his wishes, he'll call you at the last minute and ask if he should hold-off on announcing his results, in case you "find something".
Good Lord this movie is a tempest in a teacup. Everyone over-reacts to any small development that might impact the world of psychic spoon-benders and faith-healers.
But the dumbest "twist"- DeNiro isn't blind! See, when he was first introduced, I, like probably all of you, reviewed the possibility he was faking the blindness. It's what you'd expect. But then I told myself, "no, that's too obvious. They wouldn't resort to that, at this late date." But yeah, after years of faking convincingly, when tossed a quarter he snatches it in the air like a Kung-Fu master, dropping the "blind man" ruse in front of a capacity audience.
Ye Gods what a stupid, stupid movie.
