people are too simple for a good slow burn these days

I liked this movie sure it moves slow but whatever it was good, if this was made in the late 80s it would of been praised as a masterpiece....people these days smh

I agree. While it did tread familiar ground and it could've used a little more tightening up plot-wise (ie: we could've probably done without the whole Marion Cotillard subplot), I really dug the whole vibe of the film. Very 70s. A good flick. Seems like these days if something's just "good", everyone thinks it "sucks". Not everything has to be epic.

I also enjoyed it, if people want to knock it bearing in mind some are going on the trailer content then don't watch it, makes no difference to my view of the movie. I also thought the soundtrack was cool, but yea for me it's one to watch again sometime. The only gripe I had was Clive Owen who I thought wasn't very convincing as an American bad lad, but I rolled with it.

reply

Yeah I agree, Clive's American accent attempt was pretty atrocious. Not sure why they couldn't have found a good American actor for that role. Would've brought a little more authenticity to the film.

This was my favorite movie of 2013. Granted there wasn't a ton of quality flicks last year, but Wolf of Wall St, Gravity, American Hustle, etc all come in behind this one.

reply

I agree with you in principle, but I felt the movie overall lacked anything to say. I thought it was good but somewhat disappointed. I love the time period, and thought the premise sounded really interesting.

reply

Not every movie needs a subtext, especially character driven ones. It's a loose comparison but while watching this I was getting vibes similar to the Godfather. No underlying message there either. The director was simply telling a story about a family in a way that was engaging and technically masterful.

reply

I liked it. It wasn't that good to call it a masterpiece. I liked the vibe and the cast was good, and of course the directing, and story was interesting enough, but you already knew how this was going to end. But still, there was something missing. It was bit slow, but that didn't bother me much. I don't know what, but something was missing. Something that would make this shine as many crime masterpieces from 70's. I think it was the true feeleing of that era. Though it was a lot better than many other films form 2013 I've seen, I didn't rate this that high. I guess Blood Ties is just another those films that are good but missing something to really get you.

And here I would like to reccommend everyone who enjoyed Blood Ties a real hard 70's crime flick "The Seven-ups". Great movie with Roy Scheider.

I agree this is a very good film. The car chase might seem a bit lame but, otherwise, it's solid in every area. 8/10.

reply

It was decent and very 70's indeed, not just the look but also how it was made. Decent, but there was a lot of bad about it too. 6/10

El_Gallo_LOCO, I agree with you 110%. People are just sheep for the slaughter. The sound track was great as well.
