I liked this film more than most of the people I see writing here, but the Soundtrack was a problem for me. At best, it followed the template of Martin Scorcese's crime films which is what a hundred other films have done, with a couple inspired period-specific song choices.
Worse, it followed Scorcese too closely – two songs also used in Goodfellas, and how the hell are you gonna compete with Goodfellas. Cream's "Sunshine of your Love" plays while slowly zooming in on Louis (Mark Mahoney) puffing on a cigarette as he plans some killing ... sort of like in Goodfellas when Cream's "Sunshine of your love" plays while slowly zooming in on Jimmy (Robert Deniro) puffing on a cigarette as he plans some killing. It's not like this is the first time Goodfellas has been ripped off, but in this case it was just distracting. (Mark Mahoney had a great presence, btw.)
Worst of all was when Marion Cotillard goes to score some heroin and Velvet Underground's "Heroin" starts playing. They couldn't have gotten more cliche if they tried. I felt this brought the film down a notch.
