Saw an early screening.....

and heed my warning, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

shortly put, this "movie" could easily be titled "Sex and the City 3" because that's just what it was, right down to the Carrie-esque voice over, the Mr. Big look-alike(Brosnan), and NYC setting (part of the movie takes place there). except with a painful lack of sex and annoying kids.

Aside from that moment of déjà vu, the whole movie proved to be one of the most cliched, predictable, uneventful things i have ever seen. i could honestly argue that nothing really happened in the whole thing- at least nothing that warrants a movie being made about it.

there were a few memorably funny moments, but all in all this thing was a 1/5 at best.

If that's true, it's heartbreaking. I absolutely adored Pearson's book, both in print and audio form. I hope it's not the same situation as what happened with Sophie Kinsella's glorious "Shopaholic", which was made into a criminally bad Americanized movie. It makes me downright angry when Hollywood producers take these wonderful British books and turn them into so much stereotypical Hollywood tripe. Don't they know that part of what Americans love about these books is their "British-ness"? Why do producers feel like Americans won't want to see any movies set outside the US or with actors who don't sound American. Didn't they learn anything from all those wonderful (and wonderfully successful) Richard Curtis movies? Sheesh!

It's NOT true.

I'm a professional critic and wasn't looking forward to seeing it but was very surprised at how much I liked it. Yes, SJP does do some voice-over but Myers, Phillips, Munn and Hendricks supply most of it. SJP also plays a working mother, a character that has little in common with SJP's SITC character.

Every character is perfectly cast and the script is quite smart. If you can make a room full of critics laugh at what is essentially a chick flick, you must be doing something right.

Disclaimer: I didn't read the book but neither did most of the people who will see the film.

Lastly, The Weinstein Company doesn't generally release light romantic comedies. If they're doing so here, it's because they think it's better than most rom-coms.

And they're right.

Good to hear. I'm still itching to murder someone over the "Shopaholic" mess.

I agree. I read terrible reviews of this movie and so I thought I shouldn't waste my time (and felt sad for SJP, whom I really like), but when it happened to show up on a cable station and I stopped on it for a moment, I was hooked. It was clever and funny and I thought all the characters were well done. SJP was perfect as a smart but feminine and endearingly sincere character. You could totally buy the Pierce Brosnan character falling for her and those kinds of plot devices often don't come off as real. People comparing this character to Carrie in SATC or Momo to Miranda must not have been paying attention. I find them nothing alike. I mean, no, it's not Academy Award material, but nothing to be ashamed of. I'm trying to figure out if people who didn't like this just didn't get or buy the premise of how hard it is to juggle a high-power career with family.

I completely agree, I loved the fact that Shopaholic was a british book, and I thought it would be fabulous if they had made the movie (in hollywood) set in Britain, with someone like Emily Blunt as Becky. By setting it in New York they pretty much crushed any hope of doing a sequel, since the second book is about Becky actually moving to NY...

The biggest problem with adapting movies, is they aren't TRYING to cater to the population who actually read and loved the book (and made it popular in the first place), they're trying to appeal to as many people as possible to make the movie as much money as possible, rather than being true to the story at all.

reply

I've seen it to and it was surprisingly good. Not as bad as I thought it would be, but by no means a masterpiece. Everyone's acting was great, which is a near impossible feat for rom-coms, and the script was well thought out.

reply

Starts well, ends well, but the middle just kinda...is...ya know? It's not bad (and i'm a guy), it's not great, it's just rather unmemorable.

I wouldn't call it a rom-com either. It's a light-hearted dram-edy but there's really nothing romantic about it. She never does anything more than send mixed emails to the wrong people. There's no cheating, there's no real temptation for her. She does end up loving her husband more at the end of the movie but it's still not all that romantic.

If it's like Sex & The City then sign me up ;).

I'm supposed to attend a preview party tonight in Chicago. Not a huge fan of Ms. Parker, but the trailer looked OK. Will report back tomorrow (if I actually make it to the showing -- work often gets in the way).

I loved Sex and the City, but this movie was like it without sex, and without anything at all that made it worth watching.

From reading blogs and Twitter people that saw the screenings the reaction was mixed. Either they like it or hated it. There was no middle ground. People right now seem to be ditching movies if you look at the Box Office numbers. I think this movie will debut either #2 or maybe even #1 because I do think women will go see it.

reply

I hope you don't mind, but I have a quick question since you saw the movie. I run a web site that catalogs which movies have post credits scenes, a.k.a Stingers, and was hoping you would be able to help me out and let me know if there are in fact any scenes that occur either after or even during the credits?

I would be more than happy to personally thank you on this entries page and link to your website if you can help me out.

Thanks!

I Rescheduled my screening because of a 'Straw Dogs' screening, I have to agree with some of the other posts, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I liked the characters, Great Performances, especially from SJP who I'm usually not a fan of. It's nothing special but It's a rental.

I think alot of the movies lately are rentals. Why people went to see Contagion I have no idea.

reply

I'm going to go see it this evening and then I will come back and rate it. I personally like movies of the rom-com genre. Let's see if this one is good.

reply

I just saw an interview with Greg Kinnear. I've never seen an actor painfully go through a promo like he did. He never said the movie was funny. He did say that men may not enjoy the movie, and may even cringe in their seats.
SJP should have just done a photoshoot instead of this "fluff".

reply

to the person bashing Shopaholic, that film was 100 times better than this mess of a movie.

At least I cared about the main character in Shopaholic, the only character I liked in this was Momo who provided most of the entertainment.

reply

I totally thought the same thing about this being SATC 3! Did you also notice how she shamelessly has "Miranda" in the movie? Her friend is a dead ringer for the Miranda character... and the two of them are even shown walking down a city street together! That really tipped it over the edge for me!

Should've read your post earlier, then i wouldn't waste an hour on this boring film. I turned off after an hour.
