Well, I'd never heard of the original. However, after seeing this one, and reading about the original here, I have ordered the original from Netflix. Consequently, I'm glad they remade it.
I've done this a number of times before, e.g., Forbrydelsen, remade as The Killing. Never would have heard of the former if they hadn't remade it. I'm certainly happy that I got to see Forbrydelsen, one of the best tv crime thrillers ever.
Sure, many people will never watch the originals, and sometimes I've seen the foreign version before seeing the US remake. Nevertheless, there are a number of excellent foreign films/tv shows that I've seen, which I never would have, had not a US remake called them to my attention.
Don't watch the Oscars, for one. Only heard about this remake because it was featured in the previews on some other DVD I watched.
Most of my exposure to foreign film and tv comes from MHZ television network, which mostly concentrates on European cinema. I'm sure I'm missing a lot of Central and South American things--altho I have seen a few, e.g., Y Tu Mamá También--not to mention Asian and African. On the other hand, I don't have time to watch everything I want to watch anyway, so perhaps that's for the better.
At any rate, my point was that US remakes can result in people seeking out the original. Doesn't seem like a bad thing.
