The original is so much better

If they wanted to just copy a great movie, at the very least they could have stuck to the story of that original. This script just sucked.

I fully agree. Unfortunately, it might be impossible for Americans to grasp entirely every nuance from the original Oscar awarded Argentinian film. Furthermore, great actors Ricardo Darín and Guillermo Francella are unsurpassable. This version goes away from the original in so many aspects of the script, including (SPOILERS) the end.

Yeah but the ending in the original is so much better.

reply

I agree completely. This remake was pathetic.

Why don´t they use dubbed versions in the US? Every movie gets dubbed here in Germany and while I rather watch the original versions of the languages I can understand I like that better then subtitles. The remakes have proven that Americans don´t go out to see movies with subtitles but why not dubbed movies?

reply

It is technically impossible to have dual audio channels in the Usa.

They've remotes without the button for it even.

Can you imagine that...a network deciding if you want to hear the original sound,a dub, have subtitles versus a network that leaves every single choice up to you?

No?That is because you're german. You're used to networks doing stuff for their viewers instead of their advertisers ;-)

Dubbing is horrible. I like to hear the original voices

ive seen the original a lot of times, this is not a bad remake actually a good one

I haven't seen the original, but I wasn't thrilled with this movie either. It was at least 20 minutes too long, and the end was just okay.

Agreed! This very good.

I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ-Gandhi

 Yeah! Having seen both movies, I have to say this was an damn good remake of the original. Very different in tone and emphasis, but still very enjoyable in its own way! 

I enjoyed this film a lot.
I haven't seen the original and didn't know there was one until reading this chain.
I get your point though. I can't remember a remake as good as or better than the original.
In fact I try and make a point of avoiding remakes if I've seen the original.
But the guy who posted about subtitles being annoying after a while is spot on as well.
I really have to be enjoying the movie so as the subtitles don't bother me that much. REC and The Orphanage come to mind.

I was sort of confused with the whole film from very early on.
Kept thinking "Huh? Thought this guy was into horses, why're they saying he's into baseball?"

I watched the original several times and it's in my top 10 favorite films.
It is simply amazing with everything working out perfectly.

But this remake wasn't all that bad.
Yes the script kinda sucked but the acting from Ejiofor was watchable and Roberts was great (Kidman was quite poor but then the film's script did nothing for her).

I'll be watching the original many times again in the future, I probably won't see this again, but I think the ending of the remake works pretty well.
Also, I actually didn't mind the weak connection to American politics too much.

I'm a fluent spanish speaker (HA!) so i don't have to pay attention to subtitles, i can just watch the films. both were good. In my opinion, what makes these films so good is the twist ending and that wasn't tampered with so i like this one just fine too. it was also nice to see that they made the death connected to a cop instead of the book idea which was a bit of a bore. I also like that this wasn't as violent as the original.

Apparently, according to an interview I read, that was Julia Roberts' idea. 

Agree 100%. This is a bad remake. Surprising that such good actors did not read the script. A lot of Holes in the story. A perfect exampme of a movie that wants to sell only with the names of tbe cast.
Dissapointing.

It's so sad after watching such a great movie as the original to see something like this. I got no emotion, no excitement, no...nothing! I expected far more stuff from big actors as J.R. and N.K
