the dumpster scene

Julia Roberts should get a Golden Globe and Oscar for her work in this movie, it is by far her best performance. Her character is just absolutely destroyed by this and Roberts pulls it off brilliantly. That scene where she finds her daughter dead was so haunting and chilling. Even though some have slammed this movie, it does not deter from the fact Roberts gives the performance of her life.

I give the film an overall pan, but that scene lifts the film, however briefly, to a moment of brilliance. Roberts is absolutely gut wrenching in the scene. She becomes just a raving animal. Or rather a raving everywoman. Her grief becomes her whole aura, and it is astounding. If there was an award for a brilliant scene in an otherwise bland/non artistic film, this would be a contender. Nicole was so wasted!

loved the movie and her performance.

“Secret in Their Eyes” is the best film in the last 10 years, and easily one of the top 50 films of all time.

This scene made me cry

One of the favorite scenes in this. She really did great in this. It was very heartbreaking to watch. Also, love the scene when she is in the elevator by herself and thinks of her daughter and just keeps hitting the mirror with the gun finally breaking it.

Julia gives a great performance in an otherwise bland film :(

I agree she gave an amazing performance. I've never seen her in a movie like this but she did an amazing job

I thought she was brilliant - absolutely Oscar winning. Hope the fact that the movie was lacking doesn't affect any award nominations.

That scene was very moving. It was a superb performance by Julia Roberts. I started crying....

That was the most EMOTIONAL scene I have seen in a LONG time.. it was
very realistic... people who believe it was not realistic, are not
parents. That is exactly what a mother would do, no matter what
her profession.

I was tearing up so much during this scene. It was AMAZING.

"for God's sake, can't a woman wreak a little havoc without there being a man involved?"

reply

Oh, please. You cannot do that at a crime scene with your co workers around. Science says no and so does real life. That would never happen.

Dude, that's her dead daughter in there. I think in such a scenario you don't give a flying *beep* about your co-workers.

reply

Yeah that was a really good scene. The only thing that took me out of it a little was she seemed to react a bit too quickly upon reaching the dumpster. The daughter was lying face down and I would think it would take her maybe just a split second more to recgonize it was her daughter before she would start screaming/wailing etc.

But it was an excellent scene overall, including Chiwetel's bit when he realizes it's Carolyn and then has to tell her that it's her daughter.

Nobody else was bothered by the fact that a trained investigator would spoil the crime scene by jumping in the dumpster, taking off her gloves, and hugging the corpse?
I realize she was devastated by what she found.
I realize a loving mother might do just that.
But it bothered me that she obviously made it that much harder to solve the crime by doing it and nobody but nobody had the presence of mind to even mention that she completely effed up the crime scene - the most valuable piece of evidence (as long as nobody disturbs it).
Julia did a fine acting job don't get me wrong.
But it was infuriatingly stupid for the character to do that.

I still have about a half hour to watch. In addition to the glaring stupidity of the above, I'm finding so many stupid actions on the part of the cops, DA, investigators, etc that it's hard for me to buy it all.

I didn't think she was that good of an actress until I saw this movie and this scene. Her performance in this movie was oscar worthy.

 Yeah...I agree 100% with this.

I only came to see this movie because I saw Chiwetel Ejiofor in Z for Zachariah and I thought, "Man! This guy can do so much emotive acting...just his eyes! The words are almost unnecessary with him!"...having not seen him in anything else.

...but, if Julia Roberts never impressed me before (I haven't seen much of her work...I think maybe I saw the Pelican Brief) she made up for it here. She went all out in her performance and it paid-off. I felt her from beginning to end.  I mean, Ejiofor got top billing, carried most of the scenes/lines. But Julia actually had more work to do in terms of range of acting. She goes from beaten-down, to funny buddy-cop, to devastated, to loving mother, to tortured soul, to contemplative/philosophical inebriation, to avenging angel, and more. ...and everything she did was spot-on!

I really enjoyed watching her in every scene she was in! 
