The British 'Sideways'

The subject line says it all. Don't get me wrong though, I did thoroughly enjoy the film, just not as much as Sideways. I also like the fact that the ending wasn't as happy or showed promise like Sideways did.

This was what Sideways would have been a bit like if they hadn't met Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh.

I liked this but it was quite repetitive (actually I watched the 3 hour TV series on DVD) and you can't really compare it to Sideways (one of the best films of the 2000s)

reply

I agree, Sideways is in a league of its own.

Agree with similarities to Sideways but these two were just not funny enough to carry the film like the lead actors did in Sideways. I am just thinking of the guy in sideways getting battered by the Sandra Oh's motor cycle helmet or Paul Giamatti losing it like he does and there is not a single moment in The Trip that compares really.

reply

Yep Sideways is my favorite film of all time, along with a couple others. But I don't necessarily think you can accurately compare the two. The road trip idea is sort of in there, but all in all the direction style is completely different, not to mention a hell of a lot of the Trip seems impromptu, making it feel like a doco. The Trip was still very good, but not much beats Sideways. Imo.

except stuff happens in sideways

reply

Its just a marketing ploy i guess - if anyone went in expecting Sideways, I'd imagine they were sorely disappointed.

*spoilers*

I don't think the ending of Sideways showed promise. It was the delusion continuing. It seemed obvious that he would be rejected again when he arrived.

Sideways bored the crap out of me. I could never understand why they would stay friends when Thomas Haden Church was such an arse to the Paul Giamatti. Their friendship didn't seem to have any redeeming feature.

And I quite like Merlot :)

reply

yeah. I didn't like sideways. phony movie. anyway, the trip is really funny. I love the banter. if anything, this is sort of like "withnail and i".

reply

Not at all obvious. I don't know why you got that idea. She left a very heart felt message on his answering machine. She read ALL his script and she'd had time to think about him and the situation. It was definitely a hopeful ending.

Sideways was a much better movie all-around.

I don't think anyone is contesting that. :)

I seriously doubt that. Nobody makes a film like that with the intention of copying another. There are some similarities yes, but that's as far as it goes.

They made reference to Alexander Payne (writer/director of 'Sideways') in 'The Trip'. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the idea came to Michael Winterbottom (or Coogan or whoever) after watching it. Both are great in their own rights.

These bastards!
