D+D movies

I think the problem with this movies is anyone can be a character and those characters have no substance. But the books do.

Like Dragonlance and Forgotten realms

reply

The dumb thing is that even with a low budget, dialogue is free, so they should hire a good author to do the script.

reply

But you also have to have special effects. Like the Hobbit.

If you read Dragonlance and if it was done right. That could be a good movie.
I would hire top notch actors and I would push the special effects!

Solace
Palanthas
Pax Tharkas
Darken Wood
Flotsam
was amazing reading it.

reply

Yeah, I meant for the kind of movies we see on TV. I think they are okay TV movies, but they could be very good TV movies. There's several shows I can think of this supernatural themes that have excellent writing and that's why they're good.

reply

Yeah but D&D is based off Hack and Slash there is no substance too it.

Thats why I was astounded by the D&D club that I visited sometimes they loathed the movie with Justin Whalin

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190374/

They said the elf Dwarf just appeared next to Justin character OH HELLO thats what happens when we play the game.

The DM said now everyone is next to the character when we were not really close to that character.

Some of us were very far away

reply

What does that mean?

reply

that means why should any D&D film movie tv show make any sense. Since the DM says now your all together.

when you can miles apart

reply

Doesn't sound like a very good DM, or very inventive. When I used to run these things, I would have each person give me a synopsis of their character and would construct things around them that brought them together. Much better than "You all happen to be in the same tavern" and BOOM, instant campaign party.

reply

I did and to me it didnt work the DM wouldnt tell us what the world was about and there wasnt any minis

Its basically we just talked

reply

...and there wasnt any minis
I gamed for a good 15 years without minis and I certainly didn't fall for WotC's marketing gimmick of making people think they were needed to enhance game play, especially since they were trying to treat them like collectible cards where you had to buy packs and hope you got what you wanted with a lot of extras of what you already had. Rather liked the old days where if you wanted a miniature you just bought the one you wanted.

reply

Well you sure didnt buy the ones that come solo. Yeah the packs were kinda stupid but Dragonlance was cool wasnt it.

But the plastic ones are detailed but they miss the mark on the colors are a hot mess you know

Yeah but then you had to use your mind and it was like come on give me a visual representation of the world

Not just describing it too you.

reply

ROFLMAO! "But then you have to use your mind" he says... I've played D&D since its creation by G. Gygax. The whole POINT is you have to use your mind. Now i will grant you, a bad DM makes it tough. My gamers (both my normal weekend group and the Cons I ran games at) all said my world building, in game decriptions, and the level of thought I put into it made it EASY to visualize.
We rarely if ever used minis. I employed hexmaps and such so a marker was helpful but that was to make combat easier for ALL to visualize and so no "no I say your here so your here" crap occured.
If you want stuff to see stick to your xbox and leave true RolePlaying to the gamers who value it's origional design and intent, a world without any limits save for those you yourself impose on it by lack of imagination. Even the rules were designed as a GUIDE(which the first 3 DMGs said in the opening pages) to assist in running the world and create a fair means of combat NOT as hard and fast laws.
Find a good DM with many cons under his belt and gamers that rave about his skill and try it again! You very well may find minis detract from the experience!! I hope you do!! I hate hearing from gamers who had crappy DMs and therefor had their opinions colored.

reply

Here Here .Anything thing is possible with a good DM .They are the game if you ask me .I thought that the game lost something when the 4th edition came out.The 4E game seemed like the books were the rules of the game instead of just being a GUIDE(just like you remarked). It is supposed to be a game of imagination and being able to open up your mind with out limits . Sometimes it would be called fun.

I feel for the kids now just getting into the game now . The books have gone up in price a lot just to get all the start up books will cost you about $120. That's a lot of cash to cough up for a young kid unless it comes as a present .

I am surprised that they have not come out with a Drizzt movies since his books are one of fantasies best sellers .

reply

Exactly!!! That was the whole point! ANYTHING is/was possible! I agree the DM is 'the whole game' as you said because it's their responsibility to make the world/situations come to life. A bad DM kills a game or you end up w a hack n slash, go from fight to fight w little to no Role Play...which sux imho.
Yeah 4th edit. IS a hard line rule set...and WOTC keeps coming out w new edits and supplements to drain our pockets...NOT to improve the game...just to make a profit. I MISS TSR and Gary Guyax!!!
I feel for the kids as well. They are getting cost raped and a watered down version of a great game with mostly less than stellar DMs...We USED to have to take a test and register w RPGA and Polyhedron in order to DM!!!
I too am shocked they haven't released a Driz'zt/Companions of the Hall movie. They've been trying...it's been in development hell in Hollywood for years. I keep praying one will come out....unfortunately the D&D movies that HAVE released havent done all that well. Tho ugh imho they havent really given it a fair shot...make one w MAJOR A list actors! Go at it like Jackson did w the LOTR series and THEN we'd have an epic D&D flick!!
