Western forces?

“Citizens of America, the so-called Western forces of Texas and California have suffered a very great defeat at the hands of the United States military,” Offerman, who portrays the U.S. President, says in the trailer.

Shouldn't they be Southern forces? Or is the confederate states too much a cliche?

Does that mean the all states western to Texas have fallen? Or is that some sort of American culture reference I am not aware of?

Isn't Texas the lone star state, or has Tesla finally taken over Texas?

It does sound like an election year agenda driven movie. $75 million budget of the movie is the biggest ever for A24 studio, considering their last movie was a financial failure, so that is ... interesting. But that sort of money is kind of minuscule in terms of election spending.

Israel

Isn't Israel in the middle EAST instead of west?

reply

They say in the trailer that nineteen states seceded. Texas and California might just be the leaders of that faction. There is also the 'Florida Alliance' mentioned as well.

reply

Maybe the seceded states are all on the west coast, that way "western forces" make sense.

reply

Perhaps but then, what’s the Florida alliance comprised of?

reply

Retirees?

reply

Kidding aside, I am guessing the states on the east coast.

reply

Probably states like Georgia and Alabama.

If the studio is smart, the civil war won't be Democrat vs Republican because that would offend one group and hurt movie sales. It makes more sense for it to be about authoritarianism vs democracy. Authoritarianism can be left or right so they may keep the specific politics obscure.

If they're gutsy, then they will pick a side and the president will likely be a far-right extremist. The studio's previous film Midsomer was about white supremacists so they're not afraid of controversy.

reply

That and plus I think if they put the conflict against a backdrop of worsening climate conditions, that would be something interesting.

reply

I predict this movie will be a box office smash.

Last film was "Dream Scenario" which looks really good and I've been trying to watch. A24 makes a lot of original films which are critically acclaimed instead of the boring formulaic crap done by large studios. A24 made Midsomer and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

"... the government becomes a dystopian dictatorship and partisan extremist militias regularly commit political violence."

My guess is a dictator destabilizes the country and anarchy reigns with some factions attempting to hold on to democracy while others prefer authoritarianism.

No one knows for sure. I guess we'll have to see it to find out.

reply

Sure, of course.

You know Californians, they are all for authoritarianism.

In some areas. The population isn't homogenous.

reply

Just in Shasta County, right?

reply

Nope. Shasta is extreme, but there are Republican-majority racist areas elsewhere. Even in blue or red areas, there are pockets where the opposite party members live in large numbers.
