Impressive movie with a small weakness

The movie is impressive; what would we do without the French cinema?! We had to bear Oppenheimer and Barby! Everything is perfect. Johnny Depp is also very good. His French sounds like native! I don’t know what they did for him to speak French so well but it has worked. My only complaint is the casting of Maïwenn. I know that many would find her pretty but she isn’t really suitable for this role. Today we like these unusual non-European faces and consider them beautiful but this specific character really requires a very beautiful actress to be believable. I think the fact that Maïwenn is the director has led to this miscasting.

Johnny Depp's good French could be because of his marriage with french singer Vanessa Chantal Paradis, he spent a lot of time in france at that time i believe.

I too woudn't call Maïwenn beautiful per se, but she has an interesting face. I'd much rather that, than bland beauty, and she was good in the role imo.

Plus, beauty standards change and people are cast according to the tastes of their time (along with hair, make up and costumers following modern sensibilities sometimes). Cleopatra is still hailed for her beauty to this day. I've seen busts of Cleopatra, I wouldn't call her an enourmous beauty, but you don't see women like that being cast to play her. Far cry from Elizabeth Taylor.

I found Johnny Depp more distracting to be honest haha.

Overall though, I enjoyed the film.
