Poor copy of Adventureland
Way Way Back is a lame ripoff of the much superior Adventureland. Go check it out if you haven't seen it.

shareI agree, Adventureland came to my mind while watching this, and yes, it was better and funnier.
shareSimilar vibe but nowhere near a ripped off.
shareHow is TWWB a "ripoff" of Adventureland if it was written in 2005? I love both movies, but I don't really see a lot of similarities other than they both tell stories about underachievers working at theme parks.
The Way Way Back has a lot more in common with Meatballs than it does with Adventureland, IMO.
Exactly, Adventureland is good but they are two very different movies. TWWB is much more focused on its subject and is the better film for it, Adventureland uses its longer playtime to touch upon many different themes but doesn't plumb their depths.

I am a big fan of Adventure land but The Way Way Back is better and mainly because Sam Rockwell elevated the movie. He was simply amazing.
shareBetter version of Adventureland. The lead in this wasn't going after the most unlikeable and least desirable female lead ever in a coming of age movie. Plus, the love interest was hardly the focal point of the movie in TWWB.

dude, adventureland was a bad copy of adventureland. it wasn't that great. it had potential with jesse eisenberg, but kristen stewart ruined it completely.
and the annoying character played by matt bush (who i actually like) just made it cringe worthy. seriously

Ironic, I watched both movies in a row today, and I found this movie way better than Adventureland.
I didn't dislike Adventureland, but it was slower, the performance of Stewart is cringeworthy, with her emotionless expression at all times, and the lame teenage jokes get old pretty quickly.
Way Way Back is deeper at least, it presents more sympathetic characters with problems and situations much more interesting than the guy who couldn't go to Europe because his family has a financial crisis, he works on a third rate amusement park, meets girl with daddy issues who has sex with the park's stud who happens to be married, and has a very forced lame love story with a corny ending.
Entertaining at times, sure; but far from a memorable film.
