'There was a dent in the roof'... Virtually impossible.

I thought that whole "dent in the roof" accusation was totally BS for two reasons.
1. We saw what the roof looked like after Duncan slid off and there was no dent.
2. That type of roof would actually be EXTREMELY difficult, if not impossible to dent, due to the fact that it's not metal... I could see it being chipped maybe, but not dented... Even on the INSIDE of the car on the roof, you wouldn't notice a dent, as it's covered in cloth or similar material...

I would guess was that it was an acceptable slip of the tongue on Steve Carrell's part, or perhaps a goof written in the script by mistake (my bet would be on the former).. Nonetheless, the whole "dent" subplot, while I understand WHY it was put in, was virtually impossible. My guess would be that Steve's character was meant to say there was a big dent on the HOOD of the car, but the filmmakers let it slide. Thoughts?

Since Trent was a jerk towards Duncan every chance he could get, it had crossed my mind that he saw Duncan on the car and couldn't wait to harass him about it, whether there really was damage on the roof or not.

OR he dented the roof doing his girlfriend and blamed Duncan...

reply

That's probably what happened.

I am sure he saw him there. That is why he acted the way he did, he wanted to see if Duncan would tell the truth.

I am confused about Trent - sometimes I think he is one of those people who think they have good intentions but are just naturally pain in the ass. Like they think they are giving someone tough love (calling him a 3) and this was his attempt at seeing whether Duncan can "own up" to this, like he is constantly trying to test his character. On the other hand he can also just be a jerk who doesn't give a *beep* about Duncan and just wants to be a dick to him.

I think Trent was a mixture of jerk and guy who thought he was being a "good father figure" to a kid whose dad apparently didn't want him around. Most people aren't 100% good or bad. If Trent had been a total jerk to Duncan, Pam would have had to see it and dump Trent. But he is just a guy who's tough on Duncan, and he hides some of his worst behavior by keeping it to just the two of them. Like Owen, maybe Trent's dad was a tough guy as well, and rather than go the opposite way like Owen did, Trent emulated his dad.

Trent's a used car salesman, right? Fits the personality perfectly!

The car could be made of platinum or diamond and jerky would still be a dick about it.

As already mentioned: there was no dent. There wasn't supposed to be a dent.

Trent was just inventing an injury to his car in order to criticize Duncan and play the victim.
